Ring in the New Year

Lumen and Jackson boys set to begin 2016 with meeting on the hardwood   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – A new year, a familiar rivalry.   What better way to begin 2016 then with a little Jackson High-Lumen Christi boys basketball?   “It’s always a big game,” Jackson coach Dan Crowley said simply. “Emotions will be high because of who it is.”   “When you play your cross-town rival, it’s always a big game,” Lumen’s Pat Neville countered. “That’s going to be one of the best teams we see all year.”   The rivalry obviously puts a little extra on the game, but the less-than-spectacular starts each team has limped to only adds to the importance.   Lumen is 1-3 so far, dropping the season’s first three games before blowing a 21-point lead against Northwest, only to hang on for a 58-56 win on Dec. 18.   Jackson, while playing four very close games, is also just 1-3, though should be a bit less rusty after playing Dec. 29, a 73-68 loss to a 5-0 Dowagiac team.   “Every single game we’ve played has been hard fought and come down to the final minutes,” Crowley said. “All…

Experience needed

Brown says Northwest basketball team will get better with time   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – In each of the first two games of the season Justin Brown got glimpses of what his team could be, and what it is right now.   Talented and inexperienced.   Two traits that often go hand in hand, which can be good and bad.   “There are going to be nights we play very well,” Brown, the Northwest boys hoops coach, said. “And on other nights, the inexperience is going to show. We have a lot of guys playing together for the first time, and that’s a very big adjustment.”   The Mounties found their stride in the second half of last season, closing the regular portion of the schedule with eight-consecutive wins before falling in the playoff opener to end with a 13-8 record.   But the playoff game was the final four eight seniors.   The 2015-16 squad has just three varsity veterans, features seven players that were on the JV a year ago, and two transfers.   As for the afore mentioned glimpses Brown got in the first two games, well, Northwest led Harper Creek in the…

Spring Arbor’s Jason Crist named NSCAA NAIA National Coach of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Spring Arbor University women’s soccer coach Jason Crist has been named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Women’s Soccer National Coach of the Year.   Crist guided the Cougars to a 23-2-1 record and their first appearance in the NAIA National Championship Final in 2015 where they defeated the defending champs Lindsey Wilson College 3-0 to earn the program’s first-ever NAIA national championship banner.   The 2015 campaign was a historic year for Crist and the Cougars. Not only did the team capture its first NAIA national title, but also received its first NAIA Top 25 No. 1 ranking, set a new single-season wins record (23), established the longest winning streak in SAU history (19) and scored the most goals in a single-season (83).   In addition to the national recognition, Crist was also named NSCAA NAIA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year for the fourth time, as well as the Crossroads League Coach of the Year for the sixth time after leading SAU to its sixth straight conference tournament title.   Under Crist’s direction, Spring Arbor has made seven trips to the NAIA national tournament – six straight since 2010 –…

North Central shoots past Albion

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central College shot 52 percent from the field to pull away for a 77-63 victory over Albion College in non-league men's basketball action. North Central made eight of its first nine shots as it sprinted out to an 18-7 lead and it never let Albion make a run. Travell Oakes knocked down a pair of free throws and Corey Wheeler tacked on a three-point shot to pull Albion within 46-42 with 14:23 left, but that was as close as the Britons would get. Alex Sorenson and Jagger Anderson combined to score 43 points for North Central on 19-of-27 shooting from the field. Connor Rairdon chipped in with 16 points. Jordan Herron led Albion with 15 points, while Oakes fell a rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jaylen Fordham and Robert Ryan added nine points apiece. Albion, 4-4 overall, returns home for a 3 o'clock Saturday game against the University of Chicago. Courtesy of Bobby Lee, Albion College

Second half surge gives Spring Arbor Men’s Basketball 87-68 win over Lourdes

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team trailed by eight at halftime but used 55 second half points to rally back and knock off Lourdes University 87-68 on Tuesday night inside the SAU Fieldhouse.   Sophomore Zach Medendorp led the way with 20 points – matching his career-high – while also finishing with six rebounds and a career-best seven blocks. Senior Peter Barry registered a career-high 16 points, and has now reached double figures in three straight contests, and freshman Luke Barber poured in 11 points off the bench.   Spring Arbor improved to 6-6 overall with the win while Lourdes dropped to 6-6 with the loss.   The Cougars had trouble slowing down the visitors in the first half as the Gray Wolves shot 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field, including hitting 4-of-5 shots from three-point range. Lourdes scored the first five points of the game and would not surrender the lead the rest of the half.   After trailing by as many as 11, SAU fought back to trim the deficit to two, 29-27, with 3:47 remaining in the period. But, the Gray Wolves responded with five quick points to halt the run and…

Bigger goals ahead

After reaching quarterfinals, Jackson United hockey takes aim at next step   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – The record book was rewritten, from goals scored to wins accumulated to a final playoff destination reached.   And all that occurred in one year for the Jackson United hockey team last winter.   So, a year later, with many of the same characters back in the mix, well, it’s time for more.   At least that’s the attitude Andy Sinkovitz and his guys are hitting the ice with.   “The goal is to do what we did last year, but go a step further,” Sinkovitz said. “We’re going to face better competition. We’re going to be tested. But that’s what I think this team is capable of.”   The Vikings’ success in 2014-15 paved the way for a whole new round of interest, as 32 players tried out for the squad.   “And we had a lot of higher-skilled players come out, guys that played travel hockey last year,” Sinkovitz said. “We’ve been able to replace a lot of what we lost, which was awesome.”   Jackson rolled to a 22-5-1 record last winter, the best in program history.…

Spring Arbor Men’s Tennis signs local standout Patrick Doerr

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University head men's tennis coach Terry Darling made a splash with his first signee for the 2016 season, inking local standout Patrick Doerr from Lumen Christi Catholic High School.   "For the past several years I have had the privilege of watching Patrick mature as a person, and as a tennis player, and we are thrilled to have him join our team," said Darling. "He is a talented player and an exceptional athlete and we believe that he will make an immediate impact on our program."   Doerr, a two-time Division 4 First Team All-State selection, led the Titans to four straight appearances in the state finals, finishing tied for 11th in both his junior and senior seasons. He racked up 59 career wins against just 20 losses and earned All-Conference honors three consecutive years.   As a junior, Doerr was named the Citizen Patriot Tennis Player of the Year after finishing the campaign with a remarkable 27-2 record and dropping just five sets all season long playing at No. 2 singles. Doerr made the move to No. 1 singles his senior season, and won his first match in the Division 4 state…

Lean on D

Lumen hockey success will depend on play of defensemen and goaltenders   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – The goals will come, that much Mike Wartella knows.   The Lumen Christi hockey coach has two of his top-three scorers from last year back in the mix.   But if success is going to find its way to the Lumen squad this winter, it’s going to do so on the back end, where some veteran defensemen will have to assist a pair of goalies still getting their feet wet in the game of hockey, and their position between the pipes.   “We graduated some key players from last year,” Wartella said, “but the most glaring was Michael Todd.”   The three-year varsity net minder was the backbone for the Titans, playing in all 26 games last year while finishing with a 13-12-1 record.   He had a 2.65 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage to go with one shutout.   Needless to say, he was good — very good.   “Right now we have two guys that are learning the game,” Wartella said of his goaltending due, senior John Fleming and sophomore Brogan Sullivan. “They are very hard workers.…
