What started out as a close and nail biting first half, ended up being all Napoleon in the second half on Saturday night at Spring Arbor University for the Cascades Conference Championship.
Three different Hanover Horton players scored in the opening quarter, Jerry Linabury along with the dynamic duo of Luke Soper with four and Logan Blackledge added six points. Carson Godfrey nailed two three-pointers in the opening quarter for the Pirates and Holden VanPoppel added four points as they took a 14-12 lead after 1.
The second quarter continued to be back and forth. Logan Blackledge scored five straight and two others scored for the Comets late in the second quarter. Holden VanPoppel had four points off two steals before the half, making it 25-23 in favor of the Comets going into the locker room.
The second half was a much different story, as Grant Bradley (who recently returned from a football injury) turned the game around for the Pirates and never looked back. After being down by two, Bradley was on fire as he scored 13 straight points including a three-pointer and two monster dunks. That made it a 35-27 lead with 3:35 to play. Grant Bradley had 19 points after three quarters and made it 40-34.
Bradley added five more in the final quarter along with DeVonta Habern adding four more, pulling the game away for the Pirates. They walked away with a 60-38 victory on Saturday night to win their second straight Cascades Conference Championship.
Grant Bradley finished with 24 points for the Pirates, DeVonta Habern scored 13 and Holden VanPoppel added 12 points. Luke Soper and Logan Blackledge each scored 13 for Hanover Horton.
“He’s a great kid and an unbelievable worker. He was hungry to get back and was a great leader for us tonight” said Napoleon Coach Derek Seidl on Grant Bradley. “It’s awesome to get back-to-back conference titles, before last year it had been around a decade so I’m proud of the work we’ve put in since November”.
