Jackson To Host Football Evaluation Camp Next Week

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (May 8, 2023 11:31 AM ET) Area high school football players who believe they have a chance to play football at the next level will have a chance to show their skills. And they don’t have to drive to Detroit or Grand Rapids to prove it.  The Michigan High School Athletic Association, in partnership with the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association, will be hosting first-ever Spring Evaluation Camps to provide athletes with aspirations of playing college football opportunities to show their skills and abilities to college coaches at one of five locations. The one-day camps will take place between May 16-19 at Jenison High School, DeWitt High School, Jackson High School, Brighton High School and Detroit Country Day High School. Jackson High School will host its camp on Tuesday, May 16, with registration beginning at 12:30 and the evaluation camp from 1 to 3 p.m. The camp will take place at Dungy Field behind Jackson High School.  The MHSAA’s involvement will allow for the opportunity for Division I college coaches to attend, and representatives from college football programs at all levels are expected. Athletes who will be juniors or seniors in Fall 2023 may…

Wingfield is the Top Leaper in Jackson Area, State

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports  (May 7, 2023 8:00 AM ET) Concord High School athlete Mekhi Wingfield may be the poster child for becoming a late bloomer. He didn’t start participating in track and field until his freshman year in high school. Wingfield has the top long jump distance in the state – regardless of divisions – with a jump of 22 feet, 5.5 inches. He is also one of the top high jumpers in Division 4 with a leap of 6-4.  Last week Wingfield received an offer to play football at Bowling Green State University.  Despite playing 8-Man football, people are finding the hidden gem in Wingfield. The Concord junior said football is something he started to have fun with his friends. “I just wanted to go out there and have fun with my boys,” Wingfield said of playing the sport.  As a sophomore, Wingfield caught  62 catches for 656 yards and 10 touchdowns.  Last year he was named all-state in 8-Man football as a receiver. He caught a state-record 17 passes in a game early in the season.  The Bowling Green offer caught Wingfield off guard a bit. “I am not sure how they found out about me,”…
