Jackson’s Mike Raymond Wins 8th GAM Super Senior Championship

Mike Raymond with the championship trophy.  Photo courtesy Greg Johnson, GAM. (July 19, 2022 8:52 PM) Mike Raymond of Jackson won a final-group duel with Randy Lewis of Alma, shooting a closing 2-under 70 to a 71 by Lewis and winning the 8th GAM Super Senior Championship presented by Mercy Elite Sports at Atlas Valley Golf Club in Grand Blanc Tuesday.   They started the final round tied at even-par 72 and they were tied going to No. 18 where a par won it for Raymond.   “We were back and forth and the back nine turned into really good golf,” Raymond said. “We were swapping some birdies. It was fun and we were even coming down 18 and that 18 green is diabolical and it got Randy. He had a very challenging putt. I had the easier putt for sure.”   Raymond won the Super Senior title (golfers ages 65-and-over) for the first time and said it felt good to have his name on the trophy with all the great names.   “As old as we are, it’s still your peer group and you know, there are so many great champions in this field, a ton of guys who…

Calderone to Host Jackson Masters

(July 19, 2022 11:31 AM) The Jackson Masters will be played at Calderone Golf Club for the first time when the 74th edition of the local golf tournament is held August 13-14. Calderone has previously been the site of the Tournament of Champions, but this will be the first time the Grass Lake course has hosted a full-field tournament on the men’s major local schedule. The Jackson Masters is open to all amateur golfers who are residents of Jackson County, as well as those who meet one of three criteria: They graduated from a Jackson County high school or college; previously played in a Jackson Masters or City Championship; or are employed in the county. Due to the golf course layout, the Jackson Golf Committee will waive its no-cart policy and allow players to use riding carts in this tournament. All entrants will play both rounds in the 36-hole stroke play event. Entry fee is $120, or $75 for high school students. Registration can be made online at jacksongolf.net. Entry forms are also available at the Calderone, Country Club of Jackson, Cascades, Sharp Park and Arbor Hills pro shops. Entry deadline is Aug. 9 at 5 p.m.

Maddalena Completes County Open Golf Double

Steve Maddalena won the Jackson County Golf Open on Sunday at Cascades Golf Course. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (July 17, 2022 5:50 PM) A caddie for a competitor at the Jackson County Open at Cascades Golf Course on Sunday walked off the course telling her player “you win some, you lose some.” Unless you are Steve Maddalena playing at Cascades. Maddalena won his second County Open in two weeks winning the event at Cascades with a 7-under-par 137. Last week he won the Jackson County Senior Open at Cascades with a score of six-under-par 138. Maddalena has now won 55 major tournaments in Jackson County and probably that many on the senior tour.  Scoring was phenomenal over the weekend at Cascades with the sixth-place golfer – earning a gift certificate – shot even par. Greg Zeller finished second (139), Andrew Tindall shot 141 for the weekend to claim third place, first-round leader Colin O’Connell shot 143 to tie John Blasius for fourth place, and Kory Roberts shot an even-par 144 for sixth place.  A putting tip earlier in July is paying dividends for Maddalena. “I got a putting tip a few weeks ago from a friend of mine and…
