Thirty One Jackson County Wrestlers Qualify for State Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (February 19, 2022 9:41 PM) There were plenty of medals handed out to Jackson County wrestlers during the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional individual tournaments.  A total of 31 Jackson County wrestlers will move on in the wrestling state tournament looking to finish on top of the podium in two weeks.  Wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their respective weight classes to move on in the tournament. The finals will be held March 4, 5 at Ford Field in Detroit.  Here are the qualifiers, school, weight class, and order of finish at the various regional wrestling tournaments.  MHSAA Individual Regional Tournaments Division 1 at Lowell: Jaylon Riggins of Jackson was the only one of six Vikings to advance to the state meet. Riggins – who finished third at the state meet a year ago – earned a regional championship at 160 pounds during the individual meet at Lowell High School.  Division 2 at Niles: Four wrestlers from Northwest and three from Western advanced to the state meet during the D-2 regional individual tournament at Niles. Extreme Dodge Jackson County Scoreboard, Feb. 18, 2022

Boys basketball Jonesville 52, Concord 43: The Yellow Jackets lost a road showdown in the Big Eight Conference. Concord is now 12-3 on the season.  East Jackson 55, Manchester 40: East Jackson earned its fourth win of the season with a victory against Manchester.  Vandercook Lake 65, Hanover-Horton 56: The Jayhawks improved to 15-1 on the season with the road win. Hanover-Horton is 7-8 overall for the season.  Marshall 79, Lumen Christi 37: The Titans are 3-15 on the season with the loss.  Napoleon 57, Michigan Center 41: The Pirates won a big Cascades Conference home game against the Cardinals. Trent Jester scored 19 points and Zach Johnson added 14 points for Napoleon (13-2). Michigan Center (11-5) was led by Carter Kosmet with 13 points and Daylen Hinkle scoring 10 points.   Coldwater 41, Northwest 31: Northwest falls to 6-10 with the road loss at Coldwater.  Western 54, Hastings 46: Western High School trailed by nearly 10 points in the second quarter, but earned a comeback win. JTV Sports Quick Focus: Gritzmaker Improves To Be Top LCAA Bowler

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (February 18, 2022 4:12 PM) Columbia Central High School bowler Caleb Gritzmaker went from a just-missed junior season to a can’t-miss senior campaign. The CCHS junior said something just clicked this winter. Whatever it was is working for Gritzmaker – one of four seniors on the CCHS boys’ bowling team – as he is second in the conference with a 220 per-game bowling average and leading his team to another Lenawee County Athletic Association bowling title. CCHS has finished 9-1 in the LCAA for three consecutive seasons. Gritzmaker finished 18th at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 individual regional tournament with a 161 in his final game knocking him out of contention for a top 10 – and a trip to the state finals. He also missed the top 10 in the LCAA – good for first- or second-team honors.   But this season is different for Gritzmaker. “Something just turned on my senior year,” Gritzmaker said. “I thinks it is because I have supportive teammates and a supportive coach. “I also ask a lot of questions … I want to do everything right.” The CCHS senior is doing everything right in the…

Gymnastics Thirteen gymnasts from Jackson Area Gymnastics earned South Central Gymnastics League all-academic honors following the conference meet on Wednesday at Saline High School.  They included Northwest students Abby VanVorst and Ally Thrun; Grass Lake gymnasts Alaina Brown, Emily Brown, Aubrey Alford, Jordyn Sherwood and Camryn Culbert; Jackson athletes Megan Jones, Addi Richmond, and Melody Placeway; Lumen Christi gymnasts Kadence Hinkley and Annie Locke; and Napoleon athlete Alyssa Budd.  Western High School had 11 all-academic gymnasts – having a gpa of 3.5 or higher including: Jamison Barnes, Kara Boyer, Hailey Dodd, Gabrielle Filak, Lilly Heydenburg, Kenzie Hiler, Shelby Koehler, Maria Macchia, Tayor Panquin, Hailey Pollak, and Sarah Struck.  On Deck for Dec. 18, 2022 Boys basketball Concord at Jonesville 7 p.m.  East Jackson at Manchester 7 p.m.  Vanderook Lake at Hanover-Horton 7 p.m.  (LIVE on JTV, pregame at 6:45 PM, replay at 10 PM) Lumen Christi at Marshall 7 p.m.  Michigan Center at Napoleon 5:30 p.m.  Coldwater at Northwest 7:30 p.m.  Springport at Quincy 7 p.m.  Western at Hastings 7 p.m.  Girls basketball Marshall at Lumen Christi 7 p.m.  Coldwater at Northwest 6 p.m.  Hastings at Western 7 p.m.  East Jackson at Manchester 5:30 p.m.  Michigan Center at Napoleon 7…
