SAU Athletics unveils new logo

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – At the first annual Cougar Nation Athletic (CNA) Awards banquet Sunday night, Spring Arbor University Athletics introduced a new branding system that will set the visual direction of Cougar Athletics for years to come. The rebranding also coincides with the 50th anniversary of Cougar athletics.   The new brand identity is exclusive to SAU Athletics and includes new primary and secondary marks, as well as custom typography and numbers.   “Our goal was to develop a complete and unifying brand identity that not only honors our rich tradition, but is a powerful representation of who we are and who we aspire to be,” said sports information director, Chris Bauman.   Conversations about the need for a rebranding effort, which would establish a unique identity for SAU Athletics and bring a consistent look across all of its teams, have been happening for the last few years. But, it was not until the recent partnership with BSN Sports and Nike, which helped inject a new excitement into Cougar Athletics, that the department decided to move forward.   “Going through a brand identity launch is a great opportunity for us to create a consistent and modern look that keeps…

With record near .500, Clifford expects Lumen baseball team to contend for state title

By Mike Moore                                                                (Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) Staff Writer   Jackson — If regular season records were an indicator of who could, and could not go onto greatness come the MHSAA baseball state playoffs, just where would the 2015 team have found itself that memorable June?   The same group of Titans who hoisted the championship trophy on the season’s final day, was also a group that finished the regular season 16-16.   “We play an elevated schedule,” coach Phil Clifford said simply Thursday morning. “We’ll never be a team that has 25 wins (during the regular season).”   And the Titans’ skipper is just fine with that.   As Clifford spoke, his 2017 squad was 9-7 overall and 6-4 in I-8 play.   Hardly attention grabbing.   But, fresh off a doubleheader sweep of Coldwater Wednesday afternoon, Clifford remained steadfast in his belief that this is a team headed in the right direction.   “We started the season a little slow, getting guys back into the…

Brockie Takes His Fourth Spring Thaw Title

(photo: Mike Brockie, Courtesy Cascades Golf Course) By Gary Kalahar JTV Sports Mike Brockie didn’t spend much time getting ready for the season-opening Spring Thaw golf tournament. And apparently he didn’t need to. With limited practice and not getting in his first 18-hole round until six days before the tournament, Brockie still walked away with the Spring Thaw title Sunday at soggy Cascades Golf Course. Brockie, on top by two strokes after Saturday’s first round, never surrendered the lead while shooting a 2-over-par 74 for an even-par 144 total. Greg Zeller and Noah Schneider tied for second at 146. Brockie said he felt surprisingly good about his game a week ago after his first full round. “I thought, ‘Holy cow, what’s going on?’” he said. That sentiment might be shared by a lot of Brockie’s competitors who are wondering whether Jackson’s dominant golfer of this decade is ever going to slow down. Perhaps they shouldn’t hold their breath. The 46-year-old Brockie, winner of 15 major local titles since 2010 (and 19 overall) and the Player of the Year six of the last seven years, has long been known as one of the city’s biggest hitters. That doesn’t look to be…
