Boys Soccer Jackson Christian 2, Hillsdale Academy 2: J.D. Locke scored two goals in the last 15 minutes of the game tying the score for Jackson Christian. He scored the first on a penalty kick and the second with an assist from Walelign Bizenigaw. “It (the win) also gives us a shot at being co-champions of the Independent Soccer League if we can win our last game against Lenawee Christian next week,” Coach Nick Barney said. The Royals are now 6-3-3 for the season.  Adrian 3, Jackson 0 Manchester 6, Columbia Central 1   Grass Lake 9, Jonesville 1 Michigan Center 2, Leslie 0: Kaden Leighton and Spencer Berkeypile each scored goals for the Cardinals. Hunter Clemons made nine saves in earning the shutout for Michigan Center.  Boys Tennis Northwest 8, Marshall 0: The Mounties earned an 8-0 win on the road in Interstate-8 Conference play. Drew Maples, Alex Thrun, Gavin Rush, and Mason Beecher all won singles’ matches 6-0 and 6-0 at Nos. 1-4 respectively for Northwest (14-1).  College Sporting Events Men’s Golf Spring Arbor University at Innisbrook Invitational: The Cougars are 15th in the tournament with a four-man total of 311 and 305 for two 18-hole totals. Watterson Using Last Soccer Season as Motivation

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (September 24, 2023 7:33 AM ET) Two things have always been a constant in the soccer career of Roarke Watterson. He is nearly always the smallest guy on the field, but his quick feet and relentless pursuit of goals will always be there. The 5-foot 3-inch Western High School sophomore is leading the Panthers to another successful season after going 18-1 last season. Watterson has 10 goals and seven assists as the Panthers have stepped up their competition in 2023. Last year the Panthers started the season with 18 wins and advanced to the district final before losing to Richland Gull Lake, 1-0. Gull Lake went on to win a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state title in boys soccer. “The way last year ended made us mad … this is our revenge tour,” Watterson said. “We knew where we could have been (at the end of the playoffs).” Watterson has been playing soccer since he could walk at the urging of his two older brothers – Sawyer and Wittaker.  “For a number of years, I played up on my brother’s team … I was always five or six inches and 50 pounds…

Football Concord 48,  Suttons Bay 0: The Yellow Jackets finally put it together defensively with a shutout at Mt. Pleasant High School Saturday night. Gavin Riske connected on four touchdown passes and Collin Thompson ran for two scores for Concord. Mekhi Wingfield caught touchdown passes of 30, 12, and 27 yards and Jordan Medellin caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Riske. He finished with 207 passing yards on 20-for-29 passing and ran for another 84 yards. Wingfield finished with nine receptions for 126 yards. T.J. Allen finished with 10 tackles for Concord (3-2). The Yellow Jackets will travel to Gobles for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday. Concord finishes the season with three home contest. The Suttons Bay game was played at a neutral site as each teams were approximately 120 miles from Mt. Pleasant.  Football Game Changes Addison High School will host Homer next Thursday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. It is the Panthers’ homecoming game. Brogan Reaches Football Milestone in Lumen Christi Win By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (September 23, 2023 8:18 M ET) There are only three high school football coaches in Michigan with 400 or more wins.  And one now resides in Jackson County. Lumen Christi Catholic High School Coach Herb Brogan won his 400th game as a head coach following a 35-7 win over Dearborn Divine Child Friday at home.  Napoleon, Lumen Christi, Western, and Addison are all undefeated on the season following wins Friday night. Here is a look at some of the key players in each of the Jackson-area football games.  Columbia Central 29, Quincy 12: The Golden Eagles improved to 2-3 on the season with the non-conference win over Quincy. Blake Evans ran for 86 yards and one score and Ben O’Neil threw for 158 yards and two scores for CCHS. Nic Richardson and Brendon Bernstein each caught touchdown passes for the Golden Eagles. Defensively Mason Czubachowski finished with 10 tackles and Blake Hoskins added nine tackles and a pick-six for the Golden Eagles.
