Top Bowling Teams have “New” Head Coaches

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Two of the top Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 bowling programs have new coaches at the helm. Only a couple of the coaches have been around for a while. Napoleon and Vandercook Lake high schools met Wednesday in a bowling match at Suburban Lanes in Jackson. Vandercook Lake edged Napoleon in boys’ bowling in overtime, 16-15. Napoleon was too much for the Jayhawks in the girls’ match, 25-5. The Cascades Conference match was a debut for VCL girls’ bowling coach Anthony Crabtree and boys’ coach Mike Abbey. Crabtree takes over a program that has won seven state team bowling titles by Todd Reichard. Five bowlers have won individual state titles including Crabtree’s daughter Nicole – who was named the top bowler in Michigan in 2009. Crabtree was an assistant coach at VCL for nearly a decade before becoming the head coach at East Jackson for a couple of seasons. Two Teams Win District Titles, Three Others Play Tonight

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Two teams won Michigan High School Athletic Association district titles and three others have a chance tonight. District tournaments will conclude tonight (Friday) at a number of locations around the area. On Thursday, Vandercook Lake defeated Grass Lake in three sets, 25-21, 25-13, and 25-19. The Jayhawks pulled ahead in game two as Morgan LeFaive served a number of points in the win. Kate Leach finished with 14 kills, Kaely Howard finished with 30 digs, and LeFaive tallied 19 assists for the Jayhawks. Vandercook Lake will face the winner of Dansville/Bath in the first round of the regional at Leslie High School. The semifinal contest is scheduled on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Northwest defeated Okemos 3-2, getting off to a quick start with 12 consecutive points in game one. The Mounties will play in the Battle Creek Lakeview regional against the winner of St. John/Grand Ledge. The regional semifinal is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 district volleyball at Vandercook Lake. Grass Lake defeated Napoleon 3-1, and Michigan Center swept East Jackson 3-0. Grass Lake will face Jackson Prep on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at VCL. The Jayhawks will face Michigan Center in the second district semifinal at VCL. Four Earn All-State Cross Country Honors

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Four local cross country runners earned all-state honors at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals held Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. A muddy course led to higher than normal times at the 5,000-meter course. Runners competed in the annual state finals in 40-degree weather and occasional rain. In Division 4, Concord High School runner Skylar Thompson earned all-state honors for a third consecutive year. She finished 14th individually as a freshman and sophomore. Saturday, she finished in 19 minutes, 38 seconds finishing fifth overall. “My goal was to finish in the top seven,” Thompson said. “It was pretty muddy, but not as bad as I though. “During warmup we talked about which side of the course to run on.” In Division 3, three local runners earned all-state honors by finishing in the top 30. Hanover-Horton Dominates XC Regionals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Normally top-end runners have a chance to race against others with similar times once or twice a season. Lumen Christi Catholic High School cross country runner Faith Smith gets the opportunity to face top-notch competition every day in practice. Smith and teammate Renae Kutcha finished first and second respectively at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 regional on Friday afternoon at Ella Sharp Park in Jackson. The top finishes helped the Titans earn a trip to the MHSAA finals next Saturday at Michigan International Speedway with a second-place finish in the girls’ event. The day belonged to Hanover-Horton High School who easily won the boys’ competition and edged LCCHS in the girls’ D-3 team event. The Comets scored 40 points in the boys’ race, Jonesville finished second at 102, and Napoleon third with 122. All three teams advance to the state finals. The top 15 runners in each race also earn medals and a trip to the state finals. Smith finished the girls’…
