By Jeff Steers JTV Sports An additional 10 minutes of halftime did not hurt the Western High School varsity soccer team during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 soccer district match. Maybe a few light bulbs went off during the 20 minutes of non-action. Western scored three goals in the last 40 minutes of action to earn a 3-2 win over South Lyon East in the district semifinal at home on Tuesday. Western (11-1-1) will face Chelsea in the district final on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. at CHS. The Panthers are attempting to earn back-to-back district titles. It appeared as if the season was over for the Panthers following the first 40 minutes of action. South Lyon scored two goals in a six-minute period to take a 2-0 halftime lead. School officials took a few extra minutes to get two banks of lights back on. The lights were on and off during the second half – but enough to…

Three Teams Tie for First in Cascades Girls’ XC Final

Grass Lake High School runner Kailee Sandoval won her second consecutive Cascades Conference cross country individual title by winning the meet on Monday at Ella Sharp Park.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports COVID-19 nearly claimed another victim during the Cascades Conference cross country finals at Ella Sharp Park on Monday. But just about everyone went home happy due to the results. Hanover-Horton, Manchester and Grass Lake were named tri-champs at the conference meet after the teams reversed the regular season dual results. Grass Lake finished undefeated in dual meets, Manchester lost to the Warriors, and Hanover-Horton finished third in the dual season after losing two dual meets for the first time in 23 years. Monday morning Grass Lake had a positive COVID-19 test, meaning three runners from the Warriors were told to quarantine – not allowed to run at the conference meet. Hanover-Horton won the conference final with 36 points on Monday, Manchester was second at 46, and Grass Lake finished third with 80 – a reversal of fortune for the dual meets. Longtime H-H Coach Dean Blackledge told his young team to keep preparing for an opportunity. “I feel bad for the Grass…

Shannon Wins State Golf Individual Championship

Kamryn Shannon of Michigan Center High School earned a state golf title on Saturday at Forest Akers West Golf Course with a 74.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Golf instructor Steven Saari told anyone who would listen that Michigan Center High School golfer Kamryn Shannon would win a state title before she graduated. She just decided to do it a year early. Shannon won the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state individual title on Saturday at Forest Akers West Golf Course. She finished with a 2-over-par 74 to win by one stroke over Jacquelyn O’Neil of Harbor Springs. The low score helped the Cardinals finish third as a team with a four-man total of 371. About the only thing that didn’t go right for Shannon was the Cardinals missed earning a runner-up trophy by one stroke. A somewhat angry and emotional Shannon took to Forest Akers West in quest of a championship on Saturday. “I was irritated because my handicapped grandfather was not allowed to take a cart and watch me play today,” Shannon said. “I know he is going to be proud of me.” Bob Shannon, her grandfather, is part of…

Reynolds’ Lead HH to Cross Country Wins

Sophia Reynolds, left, of Hanover-Horton High School leads the pack during the 5K cross country race at home.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (October 13, 2020 9:36 PM) If cross country were like a 3 – on – 3 basketball tournament, Hanover-Horton High School would probably win the state title. But each cross country team starts with seven runners with five scoring points. The Comets have been beating teams with regularity – normally with the top three runners in each race. Hanover-Horton did it again Tuesday taking positions 1-3 in the boys’ 5K race earning 19 points and wins over Napoleon (43) and East Jackson (78). The Pirates earned a win over the Trojans. The Comets remain undefeated in the Cascades Conference heading into the conference final next week. The girls’ team did a couple better, taking the top five spots in defeating EJ and Napoleon. A Reynolds – Dean in the boys’ race and Sophia in the girls’ event – won the varsity races. Dean Reynolds finished the race in 16 minutes, 21 seconds. Teammates Rogan Melling was second (16:26) and Logan Shepherd was third (16:34). Napoleon took places fourth and fifth as…
