Brockie Claims State Golf Title

Jack Brockie of Hanover-Horton High School – shown here during a tournament earlier in the season – earned medalist honors at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state meet on Saturday.  Photo:  Jeff Steers, JTV Sports By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Last year the Hanover-Horton High School varsity golf team won the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state team title. The Comets failed to qualify for the state meet as a team this season, but golfer Jack Brockie brought home more hardware for HHHS. Brockie, an individual qualifier, earned a state individual title Saturday shooting a 3-under par 69 to earn medalist honors by four strokes. He finished with a two-day total of 142. Brockie earned a top-10 medal and all-state considerations. Brockie was one of a number of Jackson-area golfers who played well at the Ferris State University golf course. Napoleon High School finished fourth as a team and Lumen Christi Catholic High School was sixth. The Pirates finished with a two-day total of 672, led by Evan Brzyski who shot rounds of 74 and 78 to finish seventh overall in the tournament. Hunter West shot 166, Tyler Stassines finished at 175, and Shane Warner…

Maddalena on target for sixth Jackson Masters victory

By Gary Kalahar, JTV Sports                        While preparing for the Jackson Masters golf tournament one evening last week, Steve Maddalena hit the Country Club of Jackson driving range after the balls had been picked up for the night. That meant he would have to gather any balls that he hit. After striking a bucket’s worth, the job of retrieving them didn’t prove too difficult, since every one of them was on the target green. That was a good sign for Maddalena, and a bad one for the rest of the field. Maddalena stayed on target all weekend, firing rounds of 67 and 71 for a 6-under-par 138 total and a comfortable five-stroke margin of victory to claim his sixth Jackson Masters championship. Cody Lysher finished second at 143, followed by defending champion Logan Anuszkiewicz, Mark Kurzynowski and Jack Brockie at 146. Lysher, Anuszkiewicz and Brockie all matched Maddalena’s 71 on a sunny, windy Sunday at the Country Club of Jackson, but no one made a run at the three-stroke lead he carried after his exceptional opening round. With his first Jackson Masters victory since 2009, the 59-year-old Maddalena became the…

Bargesser Steals the Show at D-3 State Track, Field Finals

Lexus Bargesser, lane six, of Grass Lake High School won the 100- and 200-meter dash events at the MHSAA track and field finals Saturday at Jenison High School.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Perhaps aptly named, Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake High School was in pursuit of perfection on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field championships at Jenison High School. The freshman stole the show winning the 100 and 200-meter dash events on a stormy Saturday near Grand Rapids. The state meet was delayed at least three times for thunder and lightning in the area. Bargesser was a bolt of lightning in winning the 100 in 12.56 seconds – a personal best – and the 200 with a time of 25.43 – also her best time ever. She was one of a number of Jackson County athletes who earned medals and all-state honors finishing in the top eight in his/her events. Bargesser was seeded third heading into the 100 final, but got out of blocks quickly and held off fellow Cascades Conference runner Jayden Humphrey of Manchester at the end. “Jayden and I have gone back and…

EJ Wins First District Softball Title in more than a Quarter Century

Members of the East Jackson High School varsity softball team celebrate a district title at home Friday afternoon. Photo:  Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports It was rather evident it has been a while since the East Jackson High School varsity softball team has celebrated any kind of championship. Two players grabbed the cooler following an 11-1 win over Concord in the district final in hopes of giving Coach Steve Csage a Gatorade shower. They barely hit Csage despite the coach knowing what was about to happen. East Jackson won its first district title since 1993 with a pair of wins at home Friday afternoon in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 district tournament. The Trojans dispatched Tekonsha 15-0 in three innings in game one and beat a feisty Concord team 11-1 in the district final. East Jackson will play the winner of the Petersburg-Summerfield district – to be contested on Saturday. The regional tournament will be at Sand Creek on June 8 with East Jackson scheduled to play the second game at noon. The Trojans made quick work of Tekonsha in the district semifinal, winning 15-0 in three innings. Jordan Nicholson earned the shutout…
