JTV Sports Quick Focus: Stewart, CCHS Have Numbers and Bigger Expectations This Season

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 6, 2022 5:33 PM) It would have been easy for the Columbia Central High School varsity soccer team to pack it in last season.  The Golden Eagles had a new coach and played with less than 11 players during a number of games. But CCHS player Alyssa Stewart said a little motivation went a long way during the difficult season. The Golden Eagles don’t have that problem this year. Stewart, a junior, joins 21 other players and CCHS has Jackson College Coach Andy Hosmer back to lead the team. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 win over Jackson Christian on Tuesday night at JCHS. Stewart scored a hat trick in the win. “Our team has some really good numbers,” Stewart said after the win. “We have some new girls who have never played before and are stepping up.” Stewart, who has been playing the sport basically as early as she can remember, said last year was a learning experience. After losing her freshman year due to COVID, the Golden Eagles played a number of games with eight or nine players – instead of 11.  “The positioning on the field was different ……

Michigan Center, Columbia Central and JPEC Make Moves as New MHSAA Classifications Announced

(March 28, 2022 11:03 AM)  Classifications for Michigan High School Athletic Association elections and postseason tournaments for the 2022-23 school year have been announced, with enrollment breaks for postseason tournaments posted to each sport’s page on the MHSAA Website. Classifications for the upcoming school year are based on a second semester count date, which for MHSAA purposes was Feb. 9. The enrollment figure submitted for athletic classification purposes may be different from the count submitted for school aid purposes, as it does not include students ineligible for athletic competition because they reached their 19th birthday prior to September 1 of the current school year and will not include alternative education students if none are allowed athletic eligibility by the local school district. All sports’ tournaments are conducted with schools assigned to equal or nearly equal divisions, with lines dependent on how many schools participate in those respective sports. For 2022-23, there are 750 tournament-qualified member schools. Schools recently were notified of their classification, and sport-by-sport divisions were posted to the MHSAA Website today (March 28). MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said schools may not subsequently lower their enrollment figure. However, if revised enrollment figures are higher and indicate that a school should be playing…

Extreme Dodge Scoreboard: Grass Lake Gets Defensive in Regional Basketball Win Over CCHS

Grass Lake High School basketball player Gabi Lutchka attempts to drive past Tadassa Brown and Zoie Bamm (34) during a regional basketball game at Hudson High School on Tuesday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 8, 2022 10:56 PM) Gabi Lutchka is near the top in some Michigan High School Athletic Association in several offensive categories.  She is known as a 3-point specialist and a scorer.  Tuesday night the Grass Lake High School senior showed she could play a little defense. Lutchka stopped Columbia Central’s top scorer in the second half en route to a 47-42 comeback win in the MHSAA Division 3 regional semifinal. The Warriors will advance to play Dansville on Thursday at Hudson High School in the regional final.  The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.  Lutchka switched from guarding Tadassa Brown from CCHS and defended Zoie Bamm in the second half. Bamm went wild in the second quarter against the Warriors scoring 13 points – mostly from the inside. “They (Brown and Bamm) are both ridiculously strong,” Lutchka said. “They get offensive boards and put them back up.” The adjustment helped Grass Lake erase a 31-28 lead by CCHS after the first half.  “We…
