By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (July 30, 2021 11:52 AM) Third-year Hanover-Horton High School football Coach Perry Deliyanne says one of his staffers has a nickname for just about every player on the team. With names such as Little Willy, Evel Knievel, and Sausage, sometimes the longtime football coach doesn’t know who his assistant coach is talking about. But nearly everyone at the district opening game between Lumen Christi and the Comets last year called Hanover-Horton and up-and-coming, hard-hitting program. The Comets hope to continue that success this season. Hanover-Horton finished 4-3 overall a year ago, 4-2 in the Cascades Conference – good for second place. The Comets have never won a Cascades football title. Last year the Comets fell to Lumen Christi at home, 36-29, in the opening round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 playoffs  “The coach for Lumen Christi said he didn’t expect that out of Hanover-Horton,” HHHS senior Gabe French said. “He told us we are becoming a…

Hanover-Horton High School golfer Kyler Rod hits out of a sand trap during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 golf final at The Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University on Saturday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (June 14, 2021 3:23 PM) Hanover-Horton High School seniors – now graduates – Brogan Brockie and Kyler Rod came full circle in high school golf. But they are ready for more. Brockie, Rod, and fellow senior Jack Burmis helped the Comets finish tied for second at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state golf finals on Saturday. Hanover-Horton tied with Big Rapids for second place with a two-day total of 640. Big Rapids will go into the record book as the runner-up team to Grand Rapids Catholic Central (623) as their fifth-place golfer had a better score than the Comets’ No. 5 player. In 2018 Brockie and Rod helped Hanover-Horton win the Division 3 tournament. The Comets and Cardinals tied at 651 that year, but Hanover-Horton had the lower No. 5 golfer’s score – posted by Rod – at Forest Akers West near the campus of Michigan State University.…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (June 8, 2021 4:06 PM) Hanover-Horton High School track and field runner Dean Reynolds has proved time and time again he can run with the top talent in Michigan. Last Saturday he proved it again with a win in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state track and field finals in the 800-meter run.  Reynolds won the event with a time of 1 minute, 55.15 seconds at Jenison High School. The time is a new school record according to the school’s sports website. The Hanover-Horton senior – now graduate – also qualified to run in the 1,600-meter run at the state meet but chose to concentrate on the 800 as temperatures neared 90 degrees on Saturday.  “I have run both events in the past, but the 800 was my main concentration today,” Reynolds said after the win.  Reynolds was hooked up with fellow competitor – and friend – Alec Shaw of Homer in the 800-meter final. Reynolds had edged Shaw twice…

Despite a worldwide pandemic and the postponement of spring sports, Bargesser was hoping the training would pay off someday. That day was Friday. The GLHS senior won the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, and ran the anchor leg of the 400-meter relay for the Warriors. Grass Lake won the regional team title with 132 points. Hanover-Horton finished third (56.2), Michigan Center placed seventh (40), Napoleon was eighth (39.2), Lumen Christi finished 12th (17), and Columbia Central was 13th (9). The Warriors were juiced up all day supporting all runners – whether they placed or not. “I think it is really cool that everyone supports all the runners,” Bargesser said. “It is a great team atmosphere and lets you know we have a great team behind you.” The…
