Roy Taking Wrestling Talents to U of M

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 29, 2021 8:00 AM) Someone told 2021 Jackson High School graduate Jayson Roy he should start wrestling to improve for football. The footwork and agility would help the budding lineman. Somewhere along the line Roy fell in love with the sport of wrestling.  Roy will take his wrestling talents to the University of Michigan where he hopes to walk on at the Division 1 school. But it is his academic prowess that brought the state champion wrestler to U of M. Roy earned a full ride academic scholarship at the university. He set foot on the Ann Arbor university for the first time on Thursday. “I was supposed to tour the campus a number of times, but everything kept getting shut down because of COVID-19,” Roy said.  COVID-19 seemed to be a constant for Roy the past 18 months. A couple of days after finishing in third place at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state individual wrestling finals, everything was shut down. The football season was paused for three weeks last fall and wrestling for 2020-2021 didn’t start until late February. But Roy and the Vikings found a way to conquer…

Vikings Young, but Talented in Football

Jackson High School football Coach Scott Farley will count on players, from left, Gibson Drummond, Marcus Hoskins, and Olando Trader in the 2021 season.  By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 13, 2021 10:17 AM) Jackson High School football Coach Scott Farley says the Vikings are young, but talented heading into the 2021 football season. The Vikings will be tested early with games against former conference foes from Haslett and Grand Ledge and Division 3 state semifinalist Chelsea. “We have a really young team,” Farley said. “If we are clean and efficient, we have a chance to get off to a good start. “It is just a matter of how we handle the nerves.” Jackson finished the COVID-19 shortened season with a 3-4 record overall. The Vikings were 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference White division in 2020. Jackson lost to Portage Central 28-12 in the Division 2 district opening game.  Farley believes the Vikings will improve as the season continues. “Once we have some confidence and experience, we have a chance to be really good,” Farley said. “We will be more balanced offensively in the run/pass.” Returning quarterback Gibson Drummond is expected to lead the offense this season.  The Vikings have…
