Regular season wrapped

(file photo) Jackson trumps Lumen 55-43 on the hardwood, both teams shift focus to postseason    By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – From the football field, to the frozen ice, and now the hardwood.   In terms of the 2015-16 sports season, the guys at Jackson have had Lumen Christi's number.   Baseball season begins in mere weeks.   The Vikings completed the season sweep in basketball Thursday night, using a strong first-quarter run and some key defensive stands to exit lumen with a 55-43 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.   “There was a lot of pressure coming in here tonight,” Jackson coach Dan Crowley said after the win. “They may only be a one-win team, but we knew they were going to give us their best, and they did. We were able to make some big plays down the stretch, and that was huge.”   “It was the story of our season here tonight,” Lumen’s Pat Neville said. “We cut it four in the fourth quarter, missed a lay up, and then they made a huge play. Story of our season.”   The game was even much of the first quarter, but the Vikings…

Season Sweep

Jackson United beats Lumen 4-3 on the ice, sweep season series for first time ever By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – If it was permitted, Jackson United hockey coach Andy Sinkovitz said he may start declining power-play opportunities for his squad. And he at least appeared to be joking. The United squad’s goal of sweeping Lumen Christi this winter nearly collapsed thanks to two short-handed goals by the Titans, and another shot that rang off the post. But pretty or not, Jackson did just enough, and for the first time in program history won both meetings against its top rival with a 4-3 victory Saturday night at the Optimist Ice Arena. “Our goal this year was to get to 20 wins, and that was it right there,” Sinkovitz said afterwards. “Lumen has improved a ton since the first time we saw them. They made it tough on us all night, but good teams will do that.” Jackson won the first meeting 6-2, and Nic Weller got the orange and black on the board first Saturday night, taking advantage of a Lumen turnover in front of its own net just 6:54 into the first period. But the Titans answered roughly…

The frozen rematch: Jackson United vs. Lumen Christi

Lumen and Jackson United hockey teams set for rematch as regular season winds down   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – From a close game at the end of one period to a lopsided one by the end of the next, the first meeting between the Lumen Christi and Jackson United hockey teams may have had all the emotions one would expect.   But the final score left plenty to be desired.   As the second, and final, meeting of the 2016 winter approaches, both coaches involved don’t expect another four-goal difference to separate the city rivals.   “We expect this game to be much closer,” Jackson coach Andy Sinkovitz said Tuesday afternoon. “They’ve made a lot of changes the past few weeks, beaten some good teams recently. To me, this may be their biggest game of the season, and we have to be ready for that that.”   “I think the biggest difference between then and now is we’re playing for 51 minutes,” Lumen coach Mike Wartella said. “In the first game, the first and third periods were pretty even. We went through a 10-minute stretch of breakdowns in the second, and they capitalized. Those are the…
