Weatherspoon wrestling title tradition continues at Napoleon

Ethan Weatherspoon, left, of Napoleon High School practices with Olympic hopeful and former University of Michigan wrestler Domenic Abounader during a recent practice.    By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   A wrestling tradition started a dozen years at Napoleon High School continues today. That tradition is a Weatherspoon winning a wrestling state title for the Pirates. It has almost become a battle of one-upping one another in the sports arena. Ethan Weatherspoon won a wrestling state title last year in Division 3 at 189 pounds with a 6-4 overtime win against Brockton Cook of Birch Run. A dozen years ago his brother, Jason, started the tradition of winning state titles with a championship in the same weight class and division. Lelund Weatherspoon duplicated Jason’s feat with a 2011 championship in Division 4 at 152 pounds. He became the school’s first undefeated state champion in the process. A year later he won a state wrestling title at 160 pounds in Division 3. Just for good measure, their sister Kaniya Weatherspoon won a pair of titles in track and field. “There is definitely a competition in our family,” Ethan said. “It is all about creating your own bragging rights in the family.…

Several Area Athletes Make Detroit Free Press All-State Football Teams

By, Gabriel Schray | JTV Sports | December 18th, 2018 Fifteen Local to Jackson Athletes made the Detroit Free Press All-State Football teams. Mick McCabe is in his 47th year at the Free Press, covering primarily high school and college athletics. The list is comprised of athletes he selected and was published to Freep.com. McCabe selected hundreds of student-athletes that participated in MHSAA football this year to eight divisions worth of teams. He then named off dozens as honorable mentions for the eight divisions- who he believed deserved a nod, even though they were not placed on a team. The 2010 Michigan Sports Writer of the Year, McCabe has won several state and national awards. In April 2014, McCabe became only the fifth sports writer inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame. This is our compilation of his local and area selections. More than anything, the point of us covering his list is to make it easy for local fans, families and friends to find the athletes who were named to the daunting all-state teams. In addition to the fifteen local athletes, there is an additional 27 area athletes, for a grand total of 42 athletes within a stones…
