Local bowlers earn all-state honors

PHOTO: Mackenzie Johnson of Vandercook Lake  Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Several local high school bowlers – including a pair of state champions – earned all-state honors. The awards are voted on by Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association members. In Division 4, two-time state champion Mackenzie Johnson of Vandercook Lake heads the first-team all-state list. Johnson recently won her second consecutive state individual title with a win over Dakota Smith of Bronson High School in the D-4 final. Johnson was second at the state meet in qualifying, defeated three opponents on the way to a 364-333 win over Smith in the finals. The senior helped the Jayhawks win a pair of state team titles in four years. She also earned an academic all-state honors for her performance in the classroom. Joining Johnson on the first-team are Kassidy Alexander of Hanover-Horton and Kathryn Sayles of Napoleon. Alexander, a sophomore, qualified for the state tournament finishing 10th. She advanced to the stepladder round, but lost in the opening round of 16. Sayles was also a state qualifier who finished 22nd overall at the state meet. Cardinals Win Thriller in MHSAA District Final

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Two teams looking to make a run in the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs met in the district final on Friday at Napoleon High School. Unfortunately, only one could move on. Michigan Center High School made a number of big plays in overtime to earn a 49-44 win over Grass Lake in the Division 3 district final. The Cardinals will move on to play the regional round at home beginning Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Springport. Grass Lake goes home with a 21-2 record and a Cascades Conference championship. Both of their losses were to Michigan Center. The Cardinals defeated Grass Lake early in the season and the Warriors returned the favor with a 3-point win later in the year. “We learned from the run last year to play every possession like it was your last,” MCHS Coach Joe Lusk said. “Because it could be.” Both teams feature a number of underclassmen and this could be the beginning of two or three years of great duels. Three High School Sports Seasons Wrap Up This Weekend

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Competitive cheer, bowling and wrestling will wrap up their seasons this weekend at various locations around the state. Jackson will be will represented in all three sports. The Michigan High School Athletic Association state individual wrestling championships start today at 11:30 a.m. at Ford Field in Detroit. Bowling in four divisions will take place at various locations in Michigan. Competitive cheerleaders from around the state will show off their moves at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids Friday and Saturday. There could be a bevy of state champions from Jackson County. In wrestling, Michigan Center High School senior Corey Gamit is going for his third individual state title. The senior won a pair of titles in Division 2 at Western High School before injuries forced him to miss the MHSAA tournament as a junior. Napoleon High School senior Ethan Weatherspoon is looking for his second consecutive state title. He is undefeated as a senior and looks to be the school’s only two-time undefeated champion.…

Forty-six Area Wrestlers Advancing to Regional Competitions

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Michigan Center, Napoleon and Springport high schools all crowned three district champions during the Michigan High School Athletic Association individual wrestling district tournaments on Saturday. A total of 10 area wrestlers earned district titles at various locations. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the MHSAA individual regionals scheduled for Saturday. Corey Gamet (125 pounds), Josh Rankin (130), and Brock Kuhn (285) all claimed Division 3 championships for Michigan Center at home. Napoleon wrestlers Nick Marienfeld (112), Ethan Weatherspoon (189), and Gage Stimer (215) earned first place in their respective weight classes at Manchester High School in Division 4. Springport wrestlers Gavin Caudill (125), Thomas Potter (140), and Devin Strong (152) were all crowned district champs in Division 4 at MHS. Lincoln Raczkowski of Western High School claimed the other district championship for area wrestlers in the Division 2 district tournament at Mason High School. Shafer: Jackson Area Hoops Star

Sydney Shafer continues to impress, coaches, fans, athletes and media with her work on the court. JTV was on hand for her performance last week against Lumen Christi's varsity team. After her work on the hardwood last season, she was named a unanimous Class B first-team all-state selection by the Associated Press. It wasn't long after she became a Division 1 basketball player.  On July 15th, Shafer announced that she will be continuing her career as a collegiate athlete at Western Michigan. Just 1% of the 550,000 kids that play high school basketball this year will have the chance to play for a Division One NCAA program. This means around 10 in 1,000 will play at the next level (according to NCAA statistics). During the 2017-18 season Shafer averaged 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists per game and also earned Interstate-8 Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors. Shafer and her teammates appeared on JTV last week. See photos of their game here: On the 19th, Shafer scored 17 points, lifting her to over  1,000 on her career.
