Challenge of the season

Jackson United hockey team to put impressive record on the line in playoff opener   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – After a season of winning, a year of entering nearly every game as the favorite to skate away with victory, the Jackson United hockey team is about to be on the other side of that equation.   Coach Andy Sinkovitz has coached enough hockey, at many different levels, to approach every game with a realistic vision.   And that won’t change Monday as his Jackson squad begins the Division 1 state playoff at 6 p.m. against Brighton at the Kensington Valley Ice House.   “We know they are very good, they are very deep, they have good defense, they move the puck well,” Sinkovitz said. “I’ve been around long enough to know you have to play a perfect game to have a good shot. But we’re not a slouch of a team. If we show up with our A-game, we’ll have a good chance.”   Brighton, ranked No. 2 in all of D-1, is 16-8-0 and placed second in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association Central Division standings.   Jackson, ranked No. 13 in D-1, was 20-3-1 entering…

An opportunity to embrace

Northwest gets second shot at Marshall and opportunity to win I-8   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – There are coaches who may try to temper enthusiasm, maybe stress the need of not putting too much into any single game.   Ryan Carroll isn’t one of those coaches, at least not right now, at least not in regards to this game.   “We’re certainly excited about this opportunity. Not everybody this Friday night will be part of a game of this magnitude,” Carroll, the Northwest girls coach said of Friday night’s home tilt against Marshall. “We’re trying to embrace it and enjoy it as much as we can.”   Simply put, everything is on the line as the Mounties welcome in the Redhawks, namely a little revenge and a shot at the I-8 Conference title.   “That’s a very good team, and we know that,” Carroll said of Marshall. “They execute very well offensively, and they take such good care of the basketball. We’re a team that forces turnovers, and we didn’t do that in the first game.”   That first game he spoke of is the only blemish on Northwest’s otherwise perfect record.   The Mounties (16-1)…

The frozen rematch: Jackson United vs. Lumen Christi

Lumen and Jackson United hockey teams set for rematch as regular season winds down   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – From a close game at the end of one period to a lopsided one by the end of the next, the first meeting between the Lumen Christi and Jackson United hockey teams may have had all the emotions one would expect.   But the final score left plenty to be desired.   As the second, and final, meeting of the 2016 winter approaches, both coaches involved don’t expect another four-goal difference to separate the city rivals.   “We expect this game to be much closer,” Jackson coach Andy Sinkovitz said Tuesday afternoon. “They’ve made a lot of changes the past few weeks, beaten some good teams recently. To me, this may be their biggest game of the season, and we have to be ready for that that.”   “I think the biggest difference between then and now is we’re playing for 51 minutes,” Lumen coach Mike Wartella said. “In the first game, the first and third periods were pretty even. We went through a 10-minute stretch of breakdowns in the second, and they capitalized. Those are the…

Happy, but not content

With 14 wins in 15 games, Northwest girls hoops team is proving to be contender   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – There’s no let up, nothing to celebrate just yet. But there has to be some appreciation, some recognition for a job well done.   So far, anyway.   Some 15 games into the 2015-16 season, the Northwest girls basketball teams has been on the wrong side of the scoreboard once, and that was by a single point.   So, as he spoke of his 14-1 team on Wednesday afternoon, coach Ryan Carroll pointed out how much better things can still be, but how much fun it’s been to this point.   “It’s funny, because I sent a message out to the team (Wednesday) just to say how proud of them I really am of what we’ve been able to achieve so far,” Carroll said. “It’s something we try to take a minute to talk about after every game. You have to. We’ve put together a pretty good run right now.”   Pretty good and pretty dominant.   The Mounties started the season on a six-game win streak before falling 53-52 at Marshall (14-1) on Jan. 15.…
