Panthers Fall Late in D-2 Basketball Semifinal

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 7, 2021 10:02 PM) The Western High School girls' varsity basketball team had the saying "unfinished business" on their warmups this season. Next year the mantra may be "one more step." Western lost 45-38 to Portland High School in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state semifinals at Van Andel Arena on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers end the season with an 18-5 record and the school's first regional title in girls' basketball. Last year the Panthers were cut short of playing in the regional final by a couple of hours when COVID-19 restrictions closed down the season. "We were just blessed to be able to make it this far," WHS Coach Gina Fortress said. "Our goal was to win the regional title, so every game after that was a great experience for us. Grass Lake Advances to D-3 Basketball Finals

(April 7, 2021 9:19 AM) Hemlock High School had to withdraw from the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 girls’ basketball playoff game against Grass Lake scheduled for today at 10 a.m. An MHSAA press release did not specify the reason. The Warriors will face either Kent City (20-0) or Calumet (20-0) on Friday in the MHSAA Division 3 basketball final. The final is scheduled to be played at 3 p.m. at the Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University. The Warriors are 19-1 and playing in the school’s first girls’ state basketball finals.

Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 6, 2021 10:58 PM) The Hanover-Horton High School boys’ basketball team knew one shot would not get them back into the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 quarterfinal game on Tuesday against Arbor Prep. But it sure felt good going into the hole. The Comets erases an eight-point deficit in the first half to earn a 41-29 win over the Gators at Tecumseh High School during the quarterfinal game on Tuesday. With the win, Hanover-Horton advances to the Final Four in Division 3 for a third time. The Comets will play Flint Beecher in the Division 3 semifinals at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 5, 2021 10:32 PM) Grass Lake High School girls’ basketball Coach Andrea Cabana described her team’s performance during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 quarterfinal game “business-like.” Get in, get the job done, and go home. The Warriors defeated Columbia Central High School for the second time this season with a 49-36 win at Ypsilanti Lincoln High School on Monday. With the victory, Grass Lake will advance to the Breslin Student Event Center on the campus of Michigan State University on Wednesday to face Hemlock (14-8) in the Division 3 Final Four.
