By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Playing defense and being the next man up are two of the principles that have led to the success of Hanover-Horton High School boys’ basketball program. Those principles worked again for the Comets in the opening round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional tournament. The Comets defeated Michigan Center High School 69-38 for the third time this season advancing to the MHSAA Division 3 regional semifinal. Hanover-Horton will face Leslie (16-1) in the regional final Thursday at Springport High School beginning at 7 p.m. Just a year after graduating eight seniors – six of whom are playing college basketball – Hanover-Horton is continuing its success with a number of new faces in the starting lineup. “This senior group is my son’s group so they have been playing together for a long time,” HHHS head Coach Chad Mortimer said. “They just fell behind a good senior class … there wasn’t enough minutes for everyone. “Now it is their turn.” The…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 28, 2021 10:11 AM) Four Jackson County wrestlers will enter the Michigan High School Athletic Association state wrestling individual tournament with undefeated records. Jayson Roy of Jackson High School, Adam Haselius of Northwest High School, and Randy Frailey and Trent Hocter of Hanover-Horton High School won regional individual titles on Saturday at various venues and remained undefeated for the season in the process. Roy, a senior, is 27-0 in Division 1 at 285 pounds for the Vikings. Sophomore Adam Haselius is 24-0 at 189 pounds in Division 2 for the Mounties. Frailey is a senior with a 25-0 record at 125 pounds in Division 4 for Hanover-Horton. Teammate Hocter is 16-0 at 189 pounds for the Comets. In all, eight Jackson County wrestlers earned regional titles on Saturday. All wrestlers who placed in the top four of their weight classes at regional tournaments advanced to the state finals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the regionals to be held at various locations on Saturday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 20, 2021 8:49 PM) Three area competitive cheer teams qualified for regional competitions next week by finishing in the top four at their respective district competition. Vandercook Lake, Addison, and Concord high schools qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 regional. Vandercook Lake finished second to Hudson at the Division 4 regional at home on Saturday. The Jayhawks finished with a score of 750.04. Addison finished third (706.08) and Concord was third (631.70) in the 11-team district. Hudson won the competition with a three-round total of 765.40. Napoleon placed fifth (629.8), Leslie was sixth (619.04), Lumen Christi finished ninth (556.02), Springport was 10th (518.5) and Homer placed 11th (514.86). By Jeff Steers JTV Sports The phrases Hanover-Horton High School, wrestling, and championships have never been associated with one another. Until recently. The Comets won a district and Cascades Conference title with a win over Addison on Wednesday. Hanover-Horton defeated the Panthers 41-36 to claim its second Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 district title in three years. The district final match also served as a makeup for a Cascades Conference dual meet canceled earlier in the year due to COVID-19 concerns. With the win, Hanover-Horton tied Napoleon and Manchester high schools for the conference crown with a 6-1 record. The Comets defeated Manchester earlier in the season, Napoleon beat Hanover-Horton, and the Flying Dutchmen defeated the Pirates. Since there was no conference tournament – due to restrictions on individual tournaments – the trio of teams earned conference titles. “It is a big deal to win a conference title,” Hanover-Horton Coach Doug Cure said. “Most of the wrestlers have been in our youth program for the past seven or eight…
