City of Jackson Wins Quality of Life Award

The City of Jackson received the Quality of Life Award from the Lansing-Jackson Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers at its 3rd Annual Award Ceremony on Thursday, April 4.     The award recognizes the conversion of Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue from one-way to two-way traffic. The two major roads were part of a ring road system that was constructed in 1967 that allowed drivers to by-pass the downtown area. In 2017, the City of Jackson started working with the Michigan Department of Transportation to redesign these two roads to provide greater accessibility to the downtown area for drivers and pedestrians. City Engineer Jon Dowling says the award is an incredible honor and highlights the close collaboration between the City and MDOT. “There was a lot of work behind the scenes to plan the project and complete it. We are pleased with the ongoing results of the conversion and to see it acknowledged,” Dowling said. Jackson is already seeing the benefits of the change. City leaders credit the conversion with creating greater connectivity between downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, along with attracting new businesses. 46,000 Diapers Donated During United Way Diaper Drive

A generous Jackson County community helped gather more than 46,000 diapers in United Way of Jackson County’s first-ever diaper drive. The United Way Diaper Drive, presented by Henry Ford Allegiance Health, brought together local businesses, individuals and other organizations to collect donated diapers during March 11-22. Text-to-give and other financial gifts supporting the drive raised $5,879, all of which went to purchase diapers, bringing the total number of diapers donated to 46,718. “This was an astonishing show of compassion from across Jackson County,” said Ken Toll, president and CEO of United Way of Jackson County. “We’re grateful to our sponsors and to all those who donated for showing the generous spirit of our community.” For families in or near poverty, something as simple as diapers for babies are a source of financial stress, Toll said. Some families are forced to leave their baby in a diaper for longer than they should. That puts an infant’s health at risk. The donated diapers are now being distributed to local families in need through Catholic Charities, Child Care Network, Family Service & Children’s Aid, Jackson Housing Commission, The Salvation Army, and Together We Can Make A Difference House-Diaper Pantry. Sponsors of the Diaper…
