City Responds to Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Order

(March 24, 2020 5:20 PM) The City of Jackson is informing residents the City continues to respond to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impacts on the community. Following Gov. Whitmer’s Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order on Monday, March 23, City leaders have been making decisions about what this means for local government and the Jackson community.  The City issued details about its response in a news release:

“Over the next three weeks, the City of Jackson will be following directives made in the Executive Order and strongly encourages its residents to do the same. Staying home and avoiding contact with those outside your home is an important way to stop the spread of this illness. It’s important to note that residents are still allowed to leave homes for food, medical needs, to care for family, essential work and exercise. The City advises residents and businesses to reference the order to understand how this relates to their families and businesses.

“To help combat COVID-19, Jackson City Hall is closed to employees and residents until Monday, April 13. Dozens of dedicated employees continue to work from behind the scenes at home to continue important services for residents. Critical operations of the City continue in full force, such as police, fire, water and utility workers, to keep the community safe and healthy. Public meetings, events, and recreation programs are also all cancelled through April 13. Various public information efforts continue to keep the community informed. Last week, the City launched a special section of its website to provide accurate information about the illness and response. It can be found at cityofjackson.org/coronavirus.

“City leaders recognize the devastating impacts COVID-19 is having on the Jackson community, and has been working with other government agencies and local non-profits in a group called JCAN, which stands for the Jackson COVID-19 Action Network. JCAN is rallying the community to raise funds, donate items, and volunteer for a coordinated COVID-19 response. “Seeing as the Executive Order allows residents to leave homes for exercise, City parks and trails remain open. The City advises residents to practice social distancing while in the open spaces of our parks and trails, and to stay away gathering places like pavilions and playgrounds. All 16 of the City’s playgrounds are closed until further notice.
