Movie Night at First Baptist Church, 201 S. Jackson Street.  6 PM to 9 PM.  First Baptist Church will be showing Secondhand Lions.  This is a heartwarming coming-of-age story about a boy whose unreliable mother leaves her shy and bookish son for the summer on a ranch with his two eccentric grand-uncles, former globetrotting adventurers who still have wild streaks.  The boy isn’t especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while the men aren’t too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn’t accustomed to hunting, fishing or firearms.  Set in rural Texas in the 1960s, these great uncles chew tobacco (and offer some to the boy) and shoot rifles whenever salesmen try and ply their wares.  There is some violence that comes up in the form of flashbacks, but it’s not disturbing as it is filtered through the boy’s innocent imagination.  Within those tales, the uncle is portrayed as a man of mercy.  And yes, there really is a second-hand lion.
