Summer Kids Movies at the Michigan Theatre.  “Ugly Dolls”.  In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weirdness is celebrated, strangeness is special and beauty is embraced as more than meets the eye. After traveling to the other side of a mountain, Moxy and her UglyDoll friends discover Perfection — a town where more conventional dolls receive training before entering the real world to find the love of a child. Soon, the UglyDolls learn what it means to be different — ultimately realizing that they don’t have to be perfect to be amazing.  11 AM and 2 PM.  $4 Combos:  Small Pop and Small Popcorn.  Admission 1 Dollar.

60th Anniversary Celebration at Brown’s Advanced Care.  Brown’s has been proudly serving Jackson for 60 years!  Join us for snacks, ice cream, and a ribbon cutting ceremony.  12 PM.  Brown’s Advanced Care,  2136 Robinson Road, Suite 2, Jackson. 

Family Night at the Cascades.  It’s Superhero Night!  Gates open at 7pm.  Live music from All Directions Band starts at 7:30pm.  All Directions Band has been a fixture in the southeast Michigan music scene for many years, playing all your favorites!  Admission: $10 for up to 8 Family members.  Some of your favorite Superheroes will be making an appearance!

Eat Healthy Be Active. 11 AM to 12:30 PM.  Join Angela Maniachi of the MSU Extension at the Jackson District Library Concord Branch to learn about the benefits of healthy food and regular physical activity! Topics will include reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, preparing quick, healthy, and budget-friendly meals and snacks while managing your food resources.  Get a certificate and gift for attending at least 4 classes!  Call the Concord Branch at 517-905-1379 to register.

Red Cross Blood Drive.  12 p.m. – 5:45 p.m., MACI, 2400 North Dearing, Parma.  To help address the current emergency blood shortage, all who come to give blood or platelets with the American Red Cross July 29 through Aug. 29 will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email. Currently, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of most blood types available and less than a two-day supply of type O blood.

Yoga at Eastern.  Join us at the Jackson District Library Eastern Branch to relax, unwind, and take care of your body with the slow and gentle flow of yoga!  Bring your own mat; if you do not have one, a limited amount may be available.  $3.00 suggested donation.  3 PM, Eastern Branch, Jackson District Library.

STEM at Allskate.   12-4pm.  MOTION & SKATE DESIGN.  Students will Get an introduction into the physics of roller skating by discussing the Four parameters of motion. Students will answer an open ended question by inventing their own skate design.  Topics Like: Motion, Physics, Design.  Adm: $20 includes: STEM Lesson, Free slice of Pizza and Pop, Rental Skates, Skate Mates, 1 game of Laser Tag!

Stuff the Bus.  United Way of Jackson County, along with local business and area agencies, are inviting residents to donate school supplies so all children in Jackson County have the tools they need to learn and succeed.  Now in its second year, the Stuff The Bus school supply drive takes place July 29-Aug. 9. Stuff The Bus brings together United Way of Jackson County, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Jackson County, and the Martin Luther King Community Center. LJ Ross Associates is the presenting sponsor.  Stuff The Bus partners will offer a total of 20 drop-off locations across Jackson County. Some will park a school bus at their location so residents can drop off newly purchased school supplies. Drop-off sites include the following:

  • United Way of Jackson County office
  • Henry Ford Allegiance Health—Cafeteria, One Jackson Square lobby, Orthopedic/Neuroscience Center lobby
  • County National Bank—all locations in Jackson County
  • CP Federal Credit Union—all locations in Jackson County
  • Center for Family Health—medical and dental buildings
  • Flagstar Bank—downtown Jackson location

Those who don’t have time to shop can donate by credit card by texting STUFF to 40403, with 100 percent of those gifts going to purchase school supplies.
