Girls basketball

Leslie 72, Concord 52: Cece Barrett scored 22 points for Concord in the non-conference loss at home Saturday. 

East Jackson 53, Morenci 33: East Jackson saddled Morenci with its first loss of the season with “phenomenal defense by Addy Rudd and Priya Mericle,” according to Coach Mike Mericle. Mariah Kerley scored 29 points and Kennedy Goodwin added 14 points for East Jackson (10-6). 

Wrestling

Grass Lake Invitational: Josh Frailey of Hanover-Horton was second at 150 pounds; Nick Herbert placed sixth at 165 pounds for Jackson; Ty Farmer of Columbia finished fifth at 175 pounds; Malik Monroe of Jackson finished third at 215 pounds; Kyle Bonner was second and Reece Deshazor was third at 285 pounds for the Vikings; Nathan Ostrosky of Columbia Central finished sixth at 106 pounds; Trevor Morehouse finished second for Jackson at 113 pounds and Christian Millican of Columbia Central was fifth; A.J. Fielder was second for Hanover-Horton and Wes Edie of Grass Lake was third at 120 pounds; David Fielder of Hanover-Horton finished third at 126 pounds; Caden Bayer of Jackson finished second at 132 pounds; Colin Thompson of Concord placed fourth at 138 pounds; and Luke Guthrie of Grass Lake finished sixth at 144 pounds. 

Leslie Invitational: Aiden Bocanegra of Napoleon was third and Stephen Hertfeld was fourth at 113 pounds; Brenden Job of Napoleon was second and Trenton Hamilton was fifth at 120 pounds; David Becker of Springport won the title at 126 pounds; Daniel Dysert of Springport finished sixth at 132 pounds; Kaden Sizemore of Springport was fourth at 144 pounds; Clayton Clark of East Jackson was third, Mason Roth of Napoleon placed fourth, and Rylinn Hale of Springport was sixth at 157 pounds; Colton Raffensburger of East Jackson won the title at 165 pounds and Blake Shore of Michigan Center was third and Caleb Wendt of Springport placed sixth; Bart Laretz of Napoleon finished fifth at 175 pounds; Dallas Smith of Napoleon finished third at 215 pounds; and Aiden Nugent of Napoleon was fourth at 285 pounds. 

Holt Invitational (Girls): Drew Swihart of Hanover-Horton won the 113-111 pound division at Holt and McKenna Worthing of East Jackson was fifth;  Kayla Winget of East Jackson placed sixth at 125-137; Danni Swihart of Hanover-Horton was second at 137-145, Sienna Tovar of Jackson finished third, and Emily Uyttenhove of East Jackson placed sixth; Fie Henriksen of East Jackson finished third at 152-170; and Haylee Ryan of Northwest won the 171-201 weight class and Kami Papiersky of Jackson finished fifth.  

Portage Central Invitational: Garrett Slider of Lumen Christi was third and teammate Maverick Stergakos was fifth at 215 pounds; Nolan Curtis of Lumen Christi was sixth at 120 pounds; Reid Garcia finished second for the Titans at 144 pounds; and Owen Zink of Lumen Christi finished fifth at 157 pounds.  

Northwest at Saline Super Duals: The Mounties defeated Lake Fenton, 40-24, but lost to Romeo 36-30 in the only posted matches on trackwrestling. Jeff Miller (126), Jack Edwards (138), Zach Jacobs (165), Adam Haselius (285), and Cameron Beach (113) earned pins against Lake Fenton. 

Battle Creek Central Invitational: Owen St. Andre was fourth for Western at 138 pounds; Alex Trudell was also fourth at 175 pounds; teammate Aidan Duncan placed fourth at 215 pounds; Anthony Scutt of Western finished fourth at 285 pounds; Karen Engelter was sixth for Western at 113 pounds; and Elijah Crist was sixth at 126 pounds for the Panthers.   

Competitive cheer

Columbia Central, Concord at Michigan Center: Onsted High School won the overall event with 743.14.  

Clinton Invitational: Napoleon High School finished third (609) and Grass Lake was seventh (519) at Clinton High School.  

Bowling

Mel Wolf Invitational (Girls): Napoleon High School was the only Jackson County school advancing to the stepladder portion of the tournament. The Pirates finished seventh in qualifying with 2,561 for eight Baker games – five bowlers rolling two frames each for one team score – and two individual games. Napoleon rolled a 203 Baker game in the 10th and final qualifying game to move from ninth place to seventh. The Pirates lost in the stepladder portion of the tournament. Northwest finished 12th (2,408), Hanover-Horton was 14th (2,375), East Jackson placed 16th (2,321), Grass Lake was 19th (2,270), Michigan Center placed 23rd (2,145), Western finished right behind the Cardinals (2,004), and Vandercook Lake was 25th (1,546). The boys’ tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. at JAX 60 with the stepladder finals starting at approximately 2 p.m. 

Hockey

Jenison 3, Jackson United 0: Jackson United was shut out for the second consecutive game at the Chelsea Showcase event on Saturday. JU was outshot 35-17 in the contest.
