Football

Richmond at Western: Due to the referee shortage, the varsity football game between Richmond and Western has been moved to today (Thursday), with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff at WHS. Both teams probably need a win to get into the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs next week or improve their playoff seeding. Western is No. 27 in Division 3 at 5-3, and Richmond is 4-4 and No. 28 in Division 5. The top 32 teams in each division earn playoff spots based on a point system.

Bronson at Hanover-Horton: This game has also been changed to today (Thursday) due to lack of officials. The Big 8/Cascades Conference crossover game will start at 7 p.m. 

 

Volleyball

Columbia Central 3, Clinton 0: The Golden Eagles defeated Clinton in a makeup match on Wednesday at home. CCHS won 25-17, 25-20, and 25-17 in LCAA action. 

Coldwater 3, Lumen Christi 1

Western 3, Harper Creek 2: Western won the match on Volley for Hope night at home, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, and 15-12. Kayda Herrick had 17 kills and four aces, Brynn Rogers finished with 48 assists, Riley Kubiak tallied 20 digs, and Hillary Griffin finished with 14 kills for Western (22-6-1 overall, 6-1 Interstate-8). 

Soccer Districts

Division 3 at Columbia Central

Michigan Center 1, Onsted 0: Michigan Center beat Onsted for the Cardinals’ first boys’ district soccer title. Nikolas Kosmet scored on a header off a well-placed free kick by Daylen Hinkle.  Michael Van Riper recorded the shutout in net with 10 saves for MCHS. The Cardinals will face Pontiac Notre Dame Prep next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the D-3 regional tournament at Shaw Stadium in Beverly Hills.  

Boys Cross country

Cascades Conference finals: Manchester High School won the event and Rogan Melling of Hanover-Horton was the individual winner at the Cascades Conference cross country final at Ella Sharp Park on Wednesday. Hanover-Horton was second (44), Napoleon placed third (84), East Jackson finished fourth (89), Grass Lake was fifth (129), and Michigan Center placed sixth (153). Melling won the 5K in 16:52, Matt Rankin was fourth overall (17:57), Evan Shepherd of Hanover-Horton was fifth (18:01), teammate Austin Brown was sixth (18:05), Kyler Pequet of Napoleon took ninth place (18:35), and Napoleon teammate Ian Albert was 10th (18:57). The top 10 earn all-conference first-team honors. Manchester won the conference title, Hanover-Horton was second, Napoleon finished third, East Jackson was fourth, Grass Lake and Michigan Center tied for fifth, Addison was seventh, and Vandercook Lake was eighth. 

Girls Cross country

Cascades Conference finals: Grass Lake finished second at the meet, but earned the Cascades Conference title by finishing undefeated in the conference this season. Ava Viegelahn of Grass Lake won the 5K event in 20:11. Napoleon finished third overall, Hanover-Horton was fourth, Addison placed fifth, Michigan Center was sixth, and Vandercook and East Jackson tied for seventh. Sophia Reynolds of Hanover-Horton was second individually (20:38), Stephanie Hernandez of Addison was fourth (21:43), Madison Basham of Grass Lake placed sixth (22:07), teammate Grace Bullock was eighth (22:50), and Alexa Burgess of Napoleon finished ninth (22:59). The top 10 individual runner earned first-team all-conference honors and the next eight runners were named honorable-mention all-conference. Grass Lake finished first overall for the season, Manchester was second, Napoleon placed third, Hanover-Horton was fourth, Addison finished fifth, Michigan Center was sixth, and East Jackson and Vandercook Lake tied for seventh. 

Post-season honors

SEC White Division All-Conference: Jackson High School soccer players Brayon Tanner and Dylan Marshallsay were named to the first-team all-conference in the Southeastern Conference boys’ soccer. Gannon Fields and Mason Rose earned honorable-mention honors for the Vikings.
