(March 4, 2022 11:17 PM) Both the boys’ and girls’ team from Grass Lake High School finished second in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state team championships on Friday at Battle Creek.

The Warriors were attempting to three-peat as champions in the boys’ finals. Grass Lake lost to Bronson in the girls’ championship match. 

Here are results from Jackson County school competing in state team tournaments on Friday at various locations. 

The top eight teams in the qualifying round advance to the stepladder portion of the tournament.

Boys teams

Division 2 – Northwest High School qualified for the stepladder tournament by finishing fifth in qualifying at Super Bowl in Canton. The Mounties scored 3,428 in qualifying and defeated Swartz Creek by 31 pins in the opening round. Northwest lost by 24 pins against Grand Rapids Northview in the semifinal round. 

Division 3 – Napoleon High School finished 17th in the qualifying round at JAX 60 Recreation Center on Friday. The Pirates finished with a pin total of 2,906. 

Division 4 – Both Grass Lake and Vandercook Lake qualified for the stepladder tournament. The Warriors were the No. 1 seeded team with a total of 3,387 and Vandercook Lake was seventh scoring 2,961. Grass Lake defeated Burton Bendele and Allen Park Cabrini on the way to the finals. Vandercook Lake surprised No. 2 seeds Wyoming Potter’s House, but lost to Plymouth Christian in the semifinal round. Plymouth Christian defeated Grass Lake 1,194 – 1,162 in the finals. Brenton Cochrane rolled a 197 game for the Warriors in the finals. 

Girls teams

Division 4 – Grass Lake High School was the no. 1 seed in Division 4 at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek, scoring 2,963 in the qualifying round. Lumen Christi finished 11th in the qualifying round scoring 2,461. Grass Lake defeated Portland St. Patrick and Allen Park Cabrini on their way to the finals. The Warriors lost 1,120 – 1,011 to Bronson in the finals. Ce Chapo rolled a 186 game for Grass Lake in the finals.
