(June 14, 2021 3:23 PM) Hanover-Horton High School seniors – now graduates – Brogan Brockie and Kyler Rod came full circle in high school golf.

But they are ready for more.

Brockie, Rod, and fellow senior Jack Burmis helped the Comets finish tied for second at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state golf finals on Saturday. Hanover-Horton tied with Big Rapids for second place with a two-day total of 640.

Big Rapids will go into the record book as the runner-up team to Grand Rapids Catholic Central (623) as their fifth-place golfer had a better score than the Comets’ No. 5 player.

In 2018 Brockie and Rod helped Hanover-Horton win the Division 3 tournament. The Comets and Cardinals tied at 651 that year, but Hanover-Horton had the lower No. 5 golfer’s score – posted by Rod – at Forest Akers West near the campus of Michigan State University.

Rod, Brockie and another Brockie (Jack) will be teammates at Trine University this fall.

Jack won an individual state tournament title for Hanover-Horton in 2019.

Brogan Brockie finished fourth overall at the 2021 state tournament held at The Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University. He shot rounds of 73 and 74 to finished with a two-day total of 147.

“I was feeling confident going into the first day,” Brockie said of the tournament. “I won a Callaway Tournament here last summer.”

Brogan said the key is to keep the ball in the fairway.

“I knew I had to hit my driver in the fairways,” Brockie said.

The course is lined with tall heather that is nearly impossible to hit out of.

Brockie and Hanover-Horton found a way to stay out of trouble.

Rod finished the tournament with rounds of 78 and 80 and finished 21st overall.

Next fall, the trio will begin a new adventure as teammates.
