(UPDATED May 28, 2020 10:33 AM) Mother Nature, COVID-19, and boys’ high school golf has not been a good combination this spring.

That was evident on Thursday morning.

The Grande Golf Course was hosting a high school golf tournament for players who missed out on the 2020 spring season.

Schools were closed in early April by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan High School Athletic Association followed suit and canceled the 2020 season a couple of days later.

A rain storm on Thursday morning postponed the tournament. Officials said the tournament will be rescheduled to Thursday, June 4 at The Grande and Friday, June 5 at Calderone.

The Grande Director of Golf Steve Saari said he teamed with Calderone Golf Club to organize the event.

“We discussed hosting a high school tournament in April when the season was canceled,” Saari said. “We didn’t know when it would be … we had to wait for the restrictions to be lifted.”

Saari teamed with Brian Roberts from Calderone Golf Club to host the tournament today and Friday.

A total of 43 players were expected to play.

“We contacted the high school golf coaches and they got the word out for us,” Saari said. “We expected 30 to 40 players in the event, so 43 was a good number.”

Information on the tournament is expected to be posted on The Grande and Calderone Golf Club Facebook pages.
