Jackson Launches “Lining Up Jackson” as Lead Line Replacement Info Portal

(October 12, 2021 4:20 PM) Over the next 35 years, more than 11,000 lead water service lines will be removed and replaced in the City of Jackson. With such a massive undertaking on the horizon, the City has launched Lining Up Jackson to keep residents in the loop.

By visiting cityofjackson.org/liningupjackson, residents can learn everything they need to know about the City’s lead line replacement program. This website features education on why the changes are happening, replacement progress, and upcoming construction schedules. A short video produced by the City gets residents up to date on Jackson’s plan to replace lead service lines.

The City’s $120 million plan to switch out all 11,339 lead service lines is being paid for by water rate increases, City funds and other governmental funding sources. So far, 335 service line replacements have been performed over the past three years, but hundreds of lines will need to be swapped out every year to keep up with the State of Michigan’s requirement.

City Manager Jonathan Greene says the City’s replacements are going into high gear in 2022. “As we make plans to increase this big project, it’s important that residents are informed and know what to expect,” Greene said. “Lining Up Jackson will be an evolving effort over the next three decades as we work to refresh Jackson’s water, one line at a time.”
