(June 5, 2020 5:41 PM) If the results from The Grande/Calderone High School golf tournament this week was any indication, there will be some hot and heavy competition next spring in boys golf.

The top three finishers are all juniors.

After losing this spring season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the class of 2021 put on a show.

Leslie High School junior Cannon Risner won the 36-hole tournament with an even-par total of 144. He shot 69 at The Grande Golf Club on Thursday and 75 at Calderone Golf Club on Friday.

Jackson High School junior Justin Bunch shot a sizzling 5-under-par 67 at Calderone Golf Course on Friday for a second-place total of 147.

Napoleon High School junior Evan Brzyski shot a 1-over-par 73 on Friday to finish in third with a two-day total of 149.

Risner said he was disappointed at losing his junior season of golf.

“We had a pretty good team (in 2020), but we will come back next year,” Risner said of his Leslie High School golf team. “We have five players who can shoot 85 or better (for 18 holes).”

Risner said his added length has helped him mature as a golfer.

“My driver was staying straight and kept me in play this week,” Risner said. “I have gotten longer (off the tee) the past few years and that helps.”

He expects to attempt to qualify for the Michigan Open, play in the Junior PGA event, and a couple of HGA Junior Golf Tour events the remainder of the summer.

More than 43 high school golfers entered the two-day event. A total of 33 posted scores for the two days.

The Grande Director of Golf Steven Saari said he teamed with Calderone Golf Club Director Brian Roberts to organize the event.

“We discussed hosting a high school tournament in April when the season was canceled,” Saari said last week. “We didn’t know when it would be … we had to wait for the restrictions to be lifted.”

A post on The Grande Golf Club Facebook Page noted: “Thank you to all of the kids that played, and to all of the people who made this event possible. Many of the kids, we look forward to seeing you progress thru the remainder of your high school careers. For the seniors, it was a pleasure watching you grow throughout the past several seasons and we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.”
