An adjustment to his putting grip and loft angles on his irons paid dividend for Jackson golfer Mark Kurzynowski.
The three-time winner of the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament won a pair of matches on Saturday against younger players to advance to the semifinals of the championship bracket on Sunday.
Kurzynowski will be joined by defending champion Tom Butterfield, Justin Bunch, and Mike Brockie on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.
Winners of the semifinal matches will face one another for the prestigious tournament finals beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Kurzynowski shot a 74 last week during qualifying to become the 15th seed in a 16-player field.
“I played pretty good last week, but had a couple of bad breaks,” Kurzynowski said. “I had all week to work on my game.”
He also had a chance to change the loft on his irons and made a grip change on his putter.
It appeared as if medalist Riley Hestwood would make those changes by Kurzynowski null and void in the opening match. Hestwood was 4 up through 11 holes before Kurzynowski got hot. Kurzynowski sunk birdie putts on 12, 14, and 18 for wins. He also eagled 15 for a win.
The veteran golfer made a 25-footer on the final hole for a 1 up win.
Kurzynowski went on to defeat Bret Valkuchak 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals.
“I was 4 under par through 13 holes in my second match,” Kurzynowski said.
He will face longtime rival Mike Brockie in the semifinals. Brockie defeated Logan Anuskiewicz and Greg Zeller to advance to the next round on Sunday.
Brockie has won the Lyle Ambs two times.
Defending champion Tom Butterfield defeated Colin Norton 1 up in 19 holes and Will Double 2 and 1.
He will face Justin Bunch who scored a pair of wins over Henry Hitt and Conor Spencer on Saturday.
Butterfield and Bunch will tee off at 8 a.m. and Brockie and Kurzynowski at 8:08.
In the first-flight championship, Cannon Risner will face Tom Raymond in a semifinal match and David Mickle will battle Malon Backinger in the other semifinal match.
Tom Vann won the second-flight championship with a 3 and 1 win over Matt Brown.
