The Lumen Christi Catholic High School varsity hockey team let Jackson United know quite early in the game they were not going to play the way the Titans did against the Vikings two weeks ago.
Jackson got the puck to begin the rivalry game on Friday and had problems getting it into their own end.
And it was like that all 34 minutes of the contest at Optimist Ice Arena in a 9-0 win for Lumen Christi.
With the win the Titans improve to 11-2 while Jackson is at the other end of the spectrum at 2-12.
“The last game against Jackson, I was not happy with,” LCCHS Coach Mike Wartella said. “We started hard tonight and kept going.
“All three lines played well.”
Freshman Brett Terry scored twice for Lumen Christi and tallied one assist.
“We went out there playing as a team and hustling,” Terry said after the win.
“Coach was disappointed last time we played Jackson because we did not put our full effort into it.”
That didn’t happen again on Friday night as the Titans scored four times in the first period with everyone contributing.
Lumen scored three minutes into the game on a goal by senior captain Cade Gregory. He was assisted by line mate Kavin Kennedy on the play.
It took less than a minute for LCCHS to score goal two by senior captain Zach Whitton. Brody Dalton and Matt Mogle earned assists on the goal.
The Titans scored again with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first period on a goal by Drew Miotke with assists going to Owen Campbell and Andrew Varner.
Terry scored the first of his two goals on the night with just over two minutes remaining in the first period. Kennedy and Gregory received assists on the play.
Jackson United game out hungry in the second period and had three power plays in the next 17 minutes of play, but could not capitalize. Campbell scored a goal at the 9:48 mark of the second period on an assist by Joey Papiersky. Terry scored his second goal of the night three minutes later with the assist going to Gregory.
Gregory scored his second goal of the night for LCCHS giving the Titans a 7-0 lead. Assists were earned by Whitton and Dalton.
Varner scored with just over one minute remaining on an assist by Terry.
Miotke scored with 15 seconds remaining in the contest with assists by Campbell and Varner.
MHSAA rules give a team leading by eight or more goals with at least two period played the automatic win.
LCCHS goalie Gavin Warner earned the shutout and his fifth win against Jackson United. The senior stopped five shots in the contest.
Barrett Roe stopped 24 shots in goal for Jackson United.
The Titans are schedule to play at Loy Norrix tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. Jackson is also scheduled to play tomorrow at home against Bedford beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Both games are dependent on weather conditions.
