When the jacket came off, Jackson golfer Steve Maddalena warmed up during the City Golf Championship at the Country Club of Jackson on Saturday.

Maddalena earned a 3-2 win over Mike Brockie to claim his eighth city championship – the most of anyone in the tournament’s 95-year history.

“It has been surreal to win eight times,” Maddalena said Saturday afternoon. “It is a real honor to be up there with guys like that (Dave Hill, Vic Cuiss, and Brian Stuard).

“The last few years I have been able to hang on and outlast the younger guys with my chipping and putting.”

Maddalena struggled in the opening 18 holes of the 36-hole championship match. He was three down at one point after 11 holes, but rebounded to trail by only one hole after the morning round.

The opening 18 holes started at 7:30 a.m. with temperatures in the low 50s.

“It was really cold and I was not really thrilled about that,” Maddalena said of the temperatures. “I played better in the afternoon without (wearing) my pull over.”

Maddalena shed the pull over and got off to a quick start on the second 18 holes.

“I won holes 1 and 2 to go 1-up,” Maddalena said. “After a birdie on nine, I led by three.”

Brockie won hole 14 to cut the lead to two holes, but Maddalena won 16 to close out the match.

Maddalena plans to play in the state amateur in the coming weeks. He has won that statewide tournament three times.

He also plans to play in national senior tournaments in mid-July.

Maddalena defeated Riley Hestwood 3-2 in a semifinal match at the Country Club of Jackson on Friday.

He has won City championship titles in 1983, 1987, 1988, 2002, 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2020.

Brockie, a two-time City champion, defeated Cody Lysher in the other semifinal match on Friday, 3-1.

Brockie won City golf titles in 2010 and 2013.
