(April 14, 2020 11:09 PM) The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 8 PM Tuesday, there are 454 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases at fourteen facilities throughout the state. Of that statewide total, 215 of the confirmed positive cases are at Jackson facilities.
The MDOC is sad to report there have been a total of 11 deaths of prisoners who had tested positive for COVID-19.
A prisoner who had been housed at Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility and had tested positive for the virus died at a local hospital April 14 due to cardiac arrest.
A prisoner who had been housed at Parnall Correctional Facility and tested positive died at a local hospital April 13. On April 11 the department reported prisoners at Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center C- Unit and the Duane Waters Health Center had passed away.
On April 10, the department reported the passing of prisoners at Lakeland Correctional Facility and Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility. The prisoner who died at WHV had not been tested at the facility and was not a close contact or a patient under investigation. After her death, the hospital tested her for COVID-19 and the positive test result came back April 10.
The passing of three prisoners including two prisoners from Parnall Correctional Facility and one from Detroit Reentry Center, was announced on April 9. A prisoner who tested positive at Lakeland Correctional Facility and was taken to the hospital for further treatment also died on April 7.
The MDOC on April 1 had its first death of a prisoner who tested positive for COVID-19. He was housed at Parnall Correctional Facility. This prisoner had not previously been tested and had never told healthcare that he was feeling sick. He was found unresponsive in his cell and was taken to the hospital, where he died. The hospital then tested him and the results came back positive for the virus.
In Jackson, there are 162 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases at Parnall Correctional Facility, 22 at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, 16 at Duane Waters Health Center and 15 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility.
Among staff, there are a total of 71 COVID-19 positive cases at 15 facilities. In Jackson, there are 63 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among employees at Parnall Correctional Facility, 1 at Cooper Street Correctional Facility, 3 at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, 1 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility and 3 at Jackson Regional Warehouse.
The Michigan Department of Corrections has been added as a separate jurisdiction under the “Other” category in the daily MDHHS report of positive cases in the state. All other cases are reported by county. MDOC prisoner cases are not included in the county cumulative numbers or in the numbers reported by the Jackson County Health Department.
