(March 2, 2023 6:08 PM ET)  Like the United State Postal Service, the Michigan Center High School varsity cheer team did not let anything get in their way this season.

After a slow start the Cardinals turned it on, finishing second in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 final on Thursday at Central Michigan University.

The Cardinals finished with a three-round total of 745.2 – finishing behind Hudson with 771.04.

Michigan Center started the season slow but built up to its best scores at the end of the season.

“We had a lot of illness and injuries at the beginning of the season,” MCHS Coach Jessica Trefry said. “Half of our squad were also underclassmen.”

Trefry, in her 22nd season, said the Cardinals grew together in 2022-2023.

“We worked together and grew together this season,” she said.

Senior Abbie Visser said the Cardinals became “ferocious” at the end of the long season.

“We found a lot of passion and heart as the season went along,” Visser said. “Our coaches instilled that ferocious attitude this season.”

Junior Kate Paterson said she can’t wait until next season.

“We just kept building on our team as the season went along,” Paterson said. “I am looking forward to next year.”

Trefry and Bree Cash were listed as head coaches for the Cardinals and accepted the runner-up trophy following the competition.
