WINONA LAKE, Ind. – After claiming the opening game 2-0, the Spring Arbor University softball team came within four outs of sweeping Grace College, but the Lancers rallied late to defeat the Cougars 3-2 and salvage a split during Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Spring Arbor moves to 27-19 overall – the most wins in a season since the 2010 campaign – and sits in fourth place in the Crossroads League standings with a mark of 10-6 in league play.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel as Kaitlyn Sinclair (pictured) and GC’s Elaina McClellan and Chandler Elliott did not surrender a single run through the first five innings. The Cougars threatened in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with no one out, but the Lancers (22-18, 13-9 CL) got a pop out before inducing an inning-ending double play to escape the jam.

Spring Arbor was finally able to breakthrough in the six, however, when Liz Campeau delivered a clutch, two-out single to bring home Megan Labut. The Cougars added an insurance run in the seventh when Sydney Taylor drove in Amanda Youngheim with a base hit to center field.

That was plenty of support for Sinclair as she retired the side in order in the home half of the seventh for her fourth complete game shutout of the season.

In game two, Grace pushed a run across in the second inning to take the early lead, but Kelsey Brown settled in and held the Lancers scoreless over the next three frames.

After being held hitless through the first three innings, the Spring Arbor offense broke out in the fourth collecting four hits and scoring two runs to jump in front 2-1. That was how the score stayed until the bottom of the sixth when the home team stormed back with two outs to earn the split.

Liz Campeau picked up an RBI single in the game while Savannah Weaver and Sinclair crossed the plate.

Brown pitched all six innings allowing just one earned run and scattering 11 hits.

Spring Arbor will travel to Indiana Wesleyan (32-10, 20-6 CL) on Friday, Apr. 22 before returning home to host No. 17 Marian University (31-7, 23-3 CL) on Saturday, Apr. 23 at 12 p.m.
