(July 11, 2021 6:20 PM) It was a good weekend all around for golfers with connections to Jackson County.

Brian Stuard finished in the top 10 at the PGA Tour event at the John Deere Classic, Mark Kurzynowski repeated as the Jackson County Senior Golf Open champion, and a pair of all-state golfers helped their teams finish under par at the R.W. Mercer Jackson Junior Golf Tour event at Lakeland Hills Golf Course.

Here is a rundown of the golfing weekend.

PGA John Deere Classic: Brian Stuard finished with four rounds in the 60s at the John Deere Classic near Silvis, Illinois. He shot round of 69, 67, 66, and 67 – finishing 15-under par. The tournament was played the last two days in the rain. Stuard had missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments heading into the John Deere Classic. A top-10 moves him further inside the top 125 as the PGA playoffs loom in six weeks. Stuard will be playing in the

Barbasol Championship this week at Keene Trace in Nicholasville, Kentucky. It is the sixth consecutive week he has played in PGA Tour events. He moved from 122 on the Fed Ex Cup Series points list to 106. The top 125 at the end of the season earn playing privileges for the 2021-2022 season. He earned approximately $175,000 for his eighth-place finish at the John Deere Classic. Stuard is just short of earning $1 million for the 2020-2021 season.

Jackson County Senior Golf Open: Golfer Mark Kurzynowski repeated as Jackson County Senior Golf Open champion with a score of 145 – 1-over-par for 36 holes. Greg Zeller was second (147), John Tarpley and Mike Raymond tied for third (150), Todd Marston was fifth (151) and Pete Walz and Robert Varner tied for sixth (152). Nate LaZebnik finished with the best score of the weekend winning the first flight (ages 60-69) with an even-par 144. Mike Rich was second in that flight (146) and Harold West was third (148). Roger Kuhl won the second flight (70-plus) finishing with 151 for 36 holes. Complete results are available at www.cascadesgolfcourse.com, click on events, tournaments, and results.

Shannon shot a 70 herself for the day. The duo won the 18-hole event in the girls’ division. Justin Bunch won the 16-up boys’ event with a one-man total of 69 – three under par. Cascades Conference golfers Kyler Rod/Ben Maino and Ryder Pickering/Brady Applegate finished tied for second in the boys’ event with 76s. Charlie Saunders/Adam Fuller and Cayden Staib/Bentley Coon tied for first in the boys’ 15-under best ball with 76s. Maden Brady/Brandon Kulka won the boys’ age 11-13 nine-hole event with 39.
