(September 12 ,2020 10:17 PM) Riding a hot putter and hitting nearly three-quarters of fairways, Napoleon High School graduate Brian Stuard is tied for the lead in the Safeway Open on the PGA Tour.
Stuard shot a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday at the Silverado Resort and Spa North near Napa, Calif. He is tied with James Hahn and Cameron Percy heading into the final round on Sunday.
In his third round at the Safeway Open, Stuard hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation, and had a great day on the green having no misses on putts within 10 feet.
On the par-4 third, Stuard’s 146-yard approach to 8 feet set himself up for the birdie on the hole. This moved Brian Stuard to 1 under for the round.
After a drive to the right side of the fairway on the 407-yard par-4 fourth hole, Stuard had a 141-yard approach shot, setting himself up for the birdie.
On the 538-yard par-5 fifth hole, Stuard reached the green in three and sunk a 10-foot putt for birdie. This was his 3rd under-par hole in a row and moved Stuard to 3 under for the round.
On the par-4 12th, Stuard’s 119-yard approach to 4 feet set himself up for the birdie on the hole. This moved Stuard to 4 under for the round.
After a drive to the left side of the fairway on the 412-yard par-4 14th hole, Stuard had a 131-yard approach shot, setting himself up for the birdie.
On the par-5 18th, Stuard’s approach shot set himself up for the birdie on the hole. This moved Stuard to 6 under for the round.
Stuard has hit more than 70 percent of fairways and nearly 80 percent of greens in regulations. He has gained nearly 2 strokes on the field on the greens.
The final round will be live on the Golf Channel on Sunday beginning at 6 p.m.
Stuard is seeking his second win on the PGA Tour after a win near New Orleans in 2016.
The tournament is the first event of the 2020-2021 season.
