South Jackson Street in downtown Jackson re-opened to traffic today.  Some landscaping and small details will be completed on this project over the next few weeks and into next spring.  Cortland Street, between First and Blackstone has also re-opened.

The City of Jackson released an update on the various other construction projects still underway.

W Michigan Avenue between Brown and Steward (MDOT)

Work on this MDOT administered project to replace water mains, sewers, sidewalks and reconstruct the road with new curb and gutters and concrete pavement continues on schedule.

All water mains along the stretch of W. Michigan Ave. have been installed, and contractors have connected the main and sanitary sewer to homes and businesses along that stretch. Crews have finished paving the south side of the street and all top course pavement along the stretch of work is roughly 75 percent complete.

Sewer work is 80 percent done and lighting and signal work is 60 percent complete, according to engineering reports.

Next week, contractors will continue to work to complete the base course on the north side of the street, and lay concrete at the intersection of Louis Glick, Washington and W. Michigan Ave.

Traffic shifts will continue throughout the project, but access to businesses and homes remains open by way of detours and temporary dirt drives.

The Wisner Street intersection is now open, while the West Avenue intersection is closed at Michigan as crews continue to move east.

Kibby Road between West Avenue and City Limits

This project consists of

1) removal and replacement of the pavement on the south side of the Kibby Road boulevard with new gravel base and hot mix asphalt,

2) removal of the curb and pavement on the north side,

3) construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Kibby and Denton and

4) construction of a new non-motorized mixed-use trail with a concrete surface in the location of the former north side of the Kibby Road boulevard.

The project began Sept. 14 after lanes were closed in both directions. The street is currently open to through traffic after contractors hooked up the watermain to businesses, homes and hydrants in the area.

The project will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of water main replacement and trail construction in the fall of 2017. Phase 2 will consist of street paving and roundabout construction in the spring of 2018.

Phase 1 is scheduled to be complete in late November.

The watermain work is nearing completion, according to contractors.

Various work set for this autumn

Projects along Jackson Street, between Franklin and Washington; Cortland Street, between Franklin and Washington; Michigan Avenue, between First and Blackstone; Dewey Avenue, between Clinton and Lansing; and Fleming, between Maquire and Blakely and portions of Steward Avenue are set for water main replacement and trench construction.

Crews finished curb and gutter work along Jackson Street and are nearing completion of the sidewalks and driveways. The street is scheduled to be open sometime in the coming days

Work on Michigan Avenue between First and Blackstone is also set to be complete in the coming days, and open to traffic.

Cortland Street, between First and Blackstone, is now open to through traffic.

Downtown Jackson Loop Two-Way Conversion

Crews continue to update the lighting signals along the downtown Jackson loop in preparation to convert the streets to two-way traffic with a middle turn lane. Work is expected to continue through December, with the project scheduled to be done by Christmas.

MDOT began work on converting the railroad crossing at Cooper Street to two-way signals, once this work is complete new striping and two-way traffic work on the downtown loop can commence. Crews are expected to finish the railroad crossing work in mid-December.

Louis Glick Highway Watermain

Louis Glick Highway at the Jackson Street intersection is down a lane, while drivers on Jackson Street can’t drive through the intersection going north or south until the watermain is complete. Work was delayed after watermain testing took longer than expected, and crews will continue to work through the middle of November to completely finish the project.

Cracksealing and Various Maintenance

Various capital preventive maintenance projects throughout the City of Jackson were complete Oct. 17.
