Walberg Announces Coronavirus Relief Funding for Local Area Colleges and Students

(April 10, 2020 5:37 PM) U.S. Representative Tim Walberg, 7th District, today announced that local area colleges and universities will receive more than $22 million in grants to help students who have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The emergency relief funding is made available as a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed by Congress at the end of March.
 
“These are tough times for everyone, and college campuses and students in our area are no exception,” said Walberg. “Many students have felt significant disruptions in their academic and personal financial life, and these grants will help provide much-needed relief at a time of great uncertainty.
 
The CARES Act includes several provisions to provide support for education, including the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Of the amount allocated to each institution, at least 50 percent must be reserved to provide students with emergency financial aid grants to help cover expenses related to disruptions to their educations due to the Coronavirus, including things like food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care.
