(February 20, 2022 8:00 AM) Ask Michigan Center High School sophomore Samantha Wynn what her favorite sport is and she will tell you volleyball.

Don’t tell that to the Manchester girls’ varsity basketball team.

Wynn recently set a school record with eight 3-point baskets against Manchester earlier in the month. She scored 30 points in the Cardinals’ win – beating the Flying Dutchmen twice in a four-day period.

“When I am out there on the volleyball court, I have so much fun,” Wynn said of the fall sport. “I want to play volleyball in college.”

She may change that opinion based on her basketball skills. Wynn has been the top scorer in a number of games, including 21 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and creating seven steals against Napoleon Friday night.

She scored 17 points in the first half against the Pirates.

But Napoleon battled back from a halftime deficit and took a lead in the third quarter.

“We got a bit comfortable in the third quarter,” Wynn said of the game. “We came out to play (in the fourth quarter) like we did in the first half.”

Wynn says shooting 3-point baskets is her favorite thing to do on the basketball court. It is a precision shot for the sophomore.

“You just have to make sure the arc is high enough … so it doesn’t hit the rim,” Wynn said of her favorite shot. “You can’t be afraid to take 3-point shots.”

She played at the varsity level last year, finally feeling comfortable halfway through the season.

Wynn says the Cardinals are balanced this season. Michigan Center has four sophomores on the team – with all of them playing prominent roles for the team.

“As a team I believe we are well rounded,” Wynn said of her teammates. “We all have different aspects that we bring to the game.”

Wynn sports the fall playing volleyball, basketball in the winter, and travel volleyball in the spring.
