(July 17, 2020 10:08 AM) Building on Jackson College’s establishment of an esports team in 2019, students can now prepare for careers in this growing field with two new certificate programs, Esport Management and Esport Design. Jackson is currently the only community college in Michigan offering esport certificate programs.

The popularity of esports has skyrocketed over the last decade, with games such as Overwatch, League of Legends, Fortnite and many more drawing crowds of players and audiences. Revenues have been increasing globally at 9.7 percent per year. Last year, video game revenues totaled $139 billion.

“There are many opportunities in esports, it’s a field that is growing,” said Dr. David Smith, business instructor and sport management director. “Someone starting out can make anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000 annually.”

Esport Management

The esport management certificate will prepare for the business aspects of esport. Interested students may continue their studies to earn an associate degree in sport management. This 18-credit program may be completed in just a couple semesters and is available fully online, so, much like the appeal of esports, a student can enroll from anywhere.

Students will gain a business background with a focus on esports and learn how to market and promote events. Graduates gain knowledge in planning events, esport culture, brands, fans, and gaming industry trends. The possible job titles in esports are vast – from developing games to the business aspects of the industry, demand is great. Graduates may pursue a variety of careers including esport team coach, esport event staff, esport arena staff, esport marketing coordinator, esport business development specialist, and social media specialist.

Esport Game Design

Game designers use computer programs and illustrations to create graphics and animation for games that players find both fun and challenging. Learning computer 3-D modeling, animation and lighting in video game production, students will explore the creative and technical sides of game design.

Skills such as artistic talent and creativity paired with technical skills will help. Designers may collaborate with a team on an idea, so strong communication skills are necessary. Those hoping for a career in the field will want to build a portfolio of work along with their education. Internship opportunities will be available.

Both programs may be completed online. Students who continue on to complete an Associate in Arts in Sport Management with an Esports focus will gain a broad base of liberal arts and general education studies, as well as an exploration of sport management.
