Cardinals Win Thriller in MHSAA District Final

Michigan Center High School basketball players celebrate after winning a district title at Napoleon High School on Friday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Two teams looking to make a run in the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs met in the district final on Friday at Napoleon High School. Unfortunately, only one could move on. Michigan Center High School made a number of big plays in overtime to earn a 49-44 win over Grass Lake in the Division 3 district final. The Cardinals will move on to play the regional round at home beginning Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Springport. Grass Lake goes home with a 21-2 record and a Cascades Conference championship. Both of their losses were to Michigan Center. The Cardinals defeated Grass Lake early in the season and the Warriors returned the favor with a 3-point win later in the year. “We learned from the run last year to play every possession like it was your last,” MCHS Coach Joe Lusk said. “Because it could be.” Both teams feature a number of underclassmen and this could be the beginning of two or three years of great duels. Setbacks Can’t Slow Jackson Christian’s Sanford

Setbacks can’t slow Jackson Christian’s Sanford

By Gary Kalahar                                                        (Photo: Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) JTV Sports   When athletic director Mike Baisden wanted to launch a strength program last spring for Jackson Christian High School athletes, he knew who his initial recruit among the girls had to be. “I told her, ‘If you come and you’re consistent, people are going to follow you,’ ” Baisden said. “ ‘You’re a leader, and you’re going to be a leader for your teams next year.’ ” Baisden recognized the effect Bree Sanford could have on her fellow athletes – not only because of her personality, but because she already had demonstrated how much she was willing to endure to achieve her goals. Sanford has battled through two significant physical hardships to emerge as one of Jackson Christian’s top athletes in her junior year. Born with an extremely severe case of clubfoot, Sanford underwent years of surgeries and physical therapy to allow her to be active. Then, a serious knee injury kept her out of action her freshman year. “For someone who could…

High School Ice Hockey: Jackson United In SEC

High School Ice Hockey: Jackson United in SEC

(Photo: JTV File Photo) By, Gabriel Schray | JTV Sports | December 5th, 2018 Jackson, Michigan -- Just a year ago, Jackson United had one of the better seasons in program history. The team finished 21-2-0. The Vikings and Head Coach Andy Sinkovitz will be looking to build off of that success here this season. Coach Sinkovitz says that the team has a shorter bench than in past years, which allows for more ice time for Viking players. “This leaves it up to the players to seize the playing time,” said Sinkovitz. “It’s still early, but a couple of the guys are already starting to develop into key players.” After five games the team stands at 2-5. A power outage occurred just before the team played Kalamazoo Portage Northern. A transformer nearby the rink went out and killed the power to the Oshtemo area around the ice arena- so the game was cancelled. The Vikings have been potent on offense, scoring 21 goals in seven games (three goals per game on average). JU has struggled defensively however, allowing 28 goals over the same span (four goals per game on average). It’s a narrow enough margin that the program could easily…
