Bargesser Steals the Show at D-3 State Track, Field Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Perhaps aptly named, Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake High School was in pursuit of perfection on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field championships at Jenison High School. The freshman stole the show winning the 100 and 200-meter dash events on a stormy Saturday near Grand Rapids. The state meet was delayed at least three times for thunder and lightning in the area. Bargesser was a bolt of lightning in winning the 100 in 12.56 seconds – a personal best – and the 200 with a time of 25.43 – also her best time ever. She was one of a number of Jackson County athletes who earned medals and all-state honors finishing in the top eight in his/her events. Bargesser was seeded third heading into the 100 final, but got out of blocks quickly and held off fellow Cascades Conference runner Jayden Humphrey of Manchester at the end. “Jayden and I have gone back and…

It seemed as though each time the best performance of the James R. Selby Memorial Track and Field Classic had been turned in, a new one arose to take its place. The James R. Selby Memorial Track and Field Classic is today, the annual event serves as an all-star showcase for Jackson-area track athletes. JTV will be on hand to broadcast the event, and you can join us on our website. JTV Sports | May 28th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Jackson, Michigan– The James R. Selby Memorial Track and Field Classic is today, the annual event serves as an all-star showcase for Jackson-area track athletes. Team gather at Withington Community Stadium outside Jackson High School each year at the end of May to see who the best sprinters, distance runners, throwers, jumpers and vaulters. The showcase run of the night will be the girls 800m.  Judy Rector from Hanover-Horton has committed to run at Michigan State and Allison Rand from Lumen Christi has committed to run at Tennessee. Rector Hopes to Repeat at MHSAA Track & Field Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Hanover-Horton High School distance runner Judy Rector said she gained her strength and endurance at an early age by working on the family farm. She must have gained her love of horsepower from competing in rodeos until tenth grade. It is paying off for the soon-to-be HHHS graduate. Rector won a pair of event Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field competition at East Jackson High School. She was one of a number of athletes who will advance to the MHSAA state track and field finals on June 1 at various locations throughout the state. Rector won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 8 seconds, and backed that up by scorching the field in the 800-meter run winning by nearly seven seconds with a time of 2:12. Local bowlers earn all-state honors

PHOTO: Mackenzie Johnson of Vandercook Lake  Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Several local high school bowlers – including a pair of state champions – earned all-state honors. The awards are voted on by Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association members. In Division 4, two-time state champion Mackenzie Johnson of Vandercook Lake heads the first-team all-state list. Johnson recently won her second consecutive state individual title with a win over Dakota Smith of Bronson High School in the D-4 final. Johnson was second at the state meet in qualifying, defeated three opponents on the way to a 364-333 win over Smith in the finals. The senior helped the Jayhawks win a pair of state team titles in four years. She also earned an academic all-state honors for her performance in the classroom. Joining Johnson on the first-team are Kassidy Alexander of Hanover-Horton and Kathryn Sayles of Napoleon. Alexander, a sophomore, qualified for the state tournament finishing 10th. She advanced to the stepladder round, but lost in the opening round of 16. Sayles was also a state qualifier who finished 22nd overall at the state meet. Cardinals Win Thriller in MHSAA District Final

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Two teams looking to make a run in the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs met in the district final on Friday at Napoleon High School. Unfortunately, only one could move on. Michigan Center High School made a number of big plays in overtime to earn a 49-44 win over Grass Lake in the Division 3 district final. The Cardinals will move on to play the regional round at home beginning Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Springport. Grass Lake goes home with a 21-2 record and a Cascades Conference championship. Both of their losses were to Michigan Center. The Cardinals defeated Grass Lake early in the season and the Warriors returned the favor with a 3-point win later in the year. “We learned from the run last year to play every possession like it was your last,” MCHS Coach Joe Lusk said. “Because it could be.” Both teams feature a number of underclassmen and this could be the beginning of two or three years of great duels.
