What started out as a back-and-forth defensive battle within the first few minutes, went south quickly as the Northwest Lady Mounties rolled on Monday night over Ann Arbor Pioneer.

In the first 3 minutes, Northwest controlled the pace early. Mara Mitchell scored the first 4 points, and a Layne Sleight 3-pointer made it 7-0 early. The Pioneers stayed with Northwest though, with a block on defense by Emmanual Davis and 4 quick points.

Then, Junior Ashley Weller started pouring in for NW, finishing with 7 first quarter points. Mitchell added 6, 15-6 in favor of the Mounties after 1.

A quick 5 points by Ann Arbor Pioneer made it a 4-point game, but that would be the closest margin all night. Weller continued to stay hot for Northwest, scoring 11 points herself in just 3 minutes, making it a large 31-11 lead.

At the half, Northwest leads 33-11 with Ashley Weller scoring 18 and Mara Mitchell adding 10.

The Pioneers began the second half with 2 steals-and-scores by Jasmyne Gatson and Savannah Brewer, but no match for the opponent. Northwest kept themselves in the drivers seat in the second half, scoring 10 more points in the first 2:30 of the 3rd quarter.

Northwest outscored Ann Arbor Pioneer 20-7 in the 3rd quarter, leading big 53-18 after 3.

With a running clock for most of the 4th quarter, the Mounties quickly closed the game. Northwest picked up the non-conference win over AA Pioneer 66-27.

Ashley Weller led Northwest with 24, Mara Mitchell scored 23 and Layne Sleight added 10.

Northwest HC Ryan Carroll: “Pioneer has a lot of size, so this was a good game to have before the tournament, our girls played the most unselfish game we’ve had all year, with 2 of them over 20+ points and 3 in double figures. Sharing the ball, the extra pass is what also made it work tonight.”

Carroll has a lot of praise for his Junior, Mara Mitchell: “You can tell she (Savannah Brewer of AA Pioneer) is a great player, and can play great defense, but Mara took that personally and responded. I would match Mara against any other defender/player in the state, we believe in her.”

Northwest improves to 17-2 overall on the season.
