Annual Police Memorial

Today the annual Police Memorial Ceremony was held at Bucky Harris Park.  The Jackson Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff Department and the Michigan State Police honor those who have given their life in the line of duty.  A few moments from the event on today's show.  Guests include:  Geoff Bontrager, Superintendent of Northwest Community Schools reflects on the historic passage of both bond proposals yesterday;  Jackson City Manager Patrick Burtch;  Grass Lake's Family Worship Center Pastor Andy Scheller with the "We Heart Grass Lake" Day;  AARP Michigan's Open House (Friday, May 10 from 1 to 4 PM at Gene Davis Convention Center) with Gurtie Crater;  Jackson Men's Chorus Spring Concert promo (May 14, Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7PM) with Bill Reid;  DDA Day with Wendy Clifton and Rebecca Rae;  another installment of our trip to Marine Corps Recruiting Station in San Diego.

MacCready Reserve on Where We Live

  This week on Where We Live, we head out to Liberty Township to the MacCready Reserve.  Take a stroll in nature on this land that's open to the public.  The 408-acre MacCready Reserve is for demonstration, education, research and outreach programs in wildlife and forestry management. On Senior Living, we visit Keicher Elementary School, and the Preschool's Bookworm Reading Program.  Where We Live presented by Lloyd Ganton Retirement Centers.

Scout Project to Honor Firefighters, Police

Boy Scout Timothy Johnson is making progress on his plans to establish memorials at Blackman Park honoring firefighters and police officers who have died in the line of duty.  Johnson is currently a Life Scout with Vandercook Lake Troop 417 and is working on the memorial as his Eagle Scout project.  Police Chief Matt Heins joined him on today's show, along with a reminder of the annual Police Memorial Wednesday at 12 noon at Bucky Harris Park.  Other guests:  Jackson Public Schools Superintendent Dan Evans;  National Train Day with Louis Globensky from the Toy House;  American Red Cross staffers Shelia Drewry, Maureen Sharp and Todd Kulman;  Dewey Graves and his daughter Jennifer Graves, organizing an awareness/fundraising walk for Prader-Willi Syndrome Saturday at Cascades Falls.  Details on the walk, here.  Plus, we continue our trip to Marine Corps Recruiting Station in San Diego.

Concord Volleyball Players Sign with JCC

Jackson Community College recently signed two Concord High School seniors to play for the Jets during the 2013-14 season. Maycee Brigham is a 5-foot 9-inch outside hitter and defense setter for Kathy Lehamn, Concord Yellowjackets coach. She is a three-sport athlete at Concord, with honors in volleyball, basketball and softball. In volleyball, she has been All Conference, All Area Dream Team, All Region, Most Valuable Player of team, First Team All State. She was named Female Athlete of the Year for three years, and was varsity all four years of high school for all three sports. In the classroom, she has earned a 3.9 grade point average, is Top 10 in her class, is part of the National Honor Society, Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), Academic All State and Academic All Conference, all four years. Sydney Martines is a 5-foot 10-inch middle hitter for the Concord Yellowjackets. She is also a three-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball and softball. Van Pelt to Play Professionally in Australia

Senior point guard Matt Van Pelt has signed a one year contract to play professionally for the Darwin Uni Rebels located in Darwin, Australia. Van Pelt will depart on June 5th and tentatively plans to return to the states on December 16. Matt is one of only two American players on the roster joining a 6'9 forward from Seattle, Washington. Darwin is the capital city of the northern territory in Australia and sits right on the ocean. Temperatures range from the low 70's to the high 90's all year long. Matt started in 126 games throughout his collegiate career and led Spring Arbor to 84 victories. He was twice named to the Crossroads League All-Defensive Team. In March the National Christian College Athletics Association recognized Matt as the Pete Maravich Award Recipient. This is the highest individual honor within the NCCAA. The award which originated in 1990 was named after Pete Maravich, the legendary LSU and NBA basketball Hall-of-Famer. Van Pelt is the 24th recipient and the first in Spring Arbor history.
