Jackson District Library Sets Record

Jackson District Library Director Ishwar Laxminarayan announced JDL set a record for number of items checked out this year.  So far, nearly 1.1 million books, CDs, DVDs, ebooks and other materials have circulated at the 13 branches.   New investment is planned for 2014, including the renovation and expansion of the Meijer branch; new computers and equipment; and a new service offering streaming downloads of movies and tv shows.  Other guests:  Candidate for governor of Michigan  Mark Schauer;   Jackson Antique Mall owner Tim Bos;  Musicians Genna & Jesse (performing at the Jackson Coffee Co. MIS Cares to award five scholarships in 2014

BROOKLYN, Mich. (Dec. 11, 2013) — College can be an expensive financial investment. So MIS Cares is hoping to make it a little easier in 2014 for five Jackson and Lenawee County students taking the next step in furthering education. As part of an ongoing initiative to promote learning among students at all educational levels, MIS Cares is awarding five, $1,000 scholarships in 2014. The scholarship is open to any graduating senior in Jackson or Lenawee County who is entering a STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field at a college or university in Michigan. The winners of the scholarship will receive the monetary award during the winners’ second semester, provided they have passed all first semester classes with a “B” or better grade. “The changing world of NASCAR increases the dependence on the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Roger Curtis, MIS president, said. “As a parent of three children I fully understand the financial investment of a college education. Shirkey Reflects on “Right to Work” Anniversary

95th Annual Kiwanis Newspaper Sale Friday

The Kiwanis Club of Jackson's 95th annual Newspaper Sale will be held Friday, December 13 throughout the community.  Club Secretary Joe Wolfe, in his 40th year chairing the event, will join fellow Kiwanians on street corners and at building entrances selling newspapers for a donation.  Last year, the club donated more than $109,000 to various charities in the community.  Other guests:  Jeff Matzen, Matzen Financial, with "Money Matters";  "Builder Walk" with Andy Woell, General Materials;  Justine Marcantel on location with Teresa Boone, FiveOneSeven Salon & Spa;  Wendy Clifton, A Frame Above;  David Schultz, Assistant Director, Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

Provenzano Forecasts a Cold Winter
