Albion College’s Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium will be the scene for football under the Friday night lights September 25, as Marshall High School will host Jackson’s Lumen Christi Catholic High School in an Interstate 8 Athletic Conference matchup at 7 p.m. The game represents the first Marshall High home football game in Albion since Albion Public Schools (APS) and Marshall Public Schools entered into a partnership agreement in summer 2013. Starting with the 2013-2014 academic year, Marshall High became the established school for APS ninth through 12th graders following the conversion of APS to a K-8 district. “Albion College is proud to play a role in what has already been a successful two-year partnership between the Albion and Marshall school districts,” said Albion College President Mauri Ditzler. “Hosting this game at Sprankle-Sprandel is a strong indicator of how much Marshall has embraced the partnership, which has allowed APS to focus on making its K-8 one of the best in the state.” Playing the game near the banks of the Kalamazoo River means the Redhawks and Titans will be squaring off in a college environment with a storied past. The Albion Britons have won 35 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football championships, more than…

"We're glad to continue to give back to a community that has so much to offer." The Kiwanis Foundation of Jackson is donating $15,000 to the City of Jackson to complete construction of the 18-hole course in Ella Sharp Park. The City plans to work with the disc golf committee and area disc golfers to design the course, clear the grounds, and construct the course with a target for completion in early spring of 2016. The Jackson Public School District is pleased to announce that the Michigan Department of Education has released Sharp Park Academy from its Focus School Status Report Card Category. In 2012, the Michigan Department of Education added a “focus” category to its Michigan School Report Card. The state report card lists the federal Adequate Yearly Progress, the Education YES grades and the overall top-to-bottom rankings of all school buildings. Focus status designation was given to schools in Michigan who have large achievement gaps between their top 30 percent of students and the bottom 30 percent of students. At that time JPS’s Sharp Park IB World School was notified of its “focus” status. Release from “focus” status mandated significant accountability and reporting requirements by the State of Michigan’s Department of Education. Jackson Public Schools received a letter from Brian J. Whiston; Michigan State Superintendent today August 12, 2015. Mr. Whiston stated “Congratulations! The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is releasing the following 2012 Cohort school from Focus School status: Sharp Park Academy. Your school’s hard work and emphasis on data-driven decisions have narrowed the achievement gap between the top and bottom performing 30 percent of students in the above named focus school(s)…
