Needing to win

Vandercook playing for home field, Springport playing for the playoffs as two teams meet tonight  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – There’s a bit of desperation, and then there’s a whole ton of it. That about sums up tonight’s battle between the Vandercook Lake and Springport football teams. Vandercook, 7-1 and locked into a playoff spot, has a good shot at hosting an opener next week if the Jayhawks can find a way to win. Springport, 5-3 and resting squarely on the bubble, has an outside shot to make the postseason at 5-4, but is guaranteed a spot with what would likely be considered an upset on Vandercook — on the road no less. Is that enough to get excited about tonight’s Week 9 meeting? “We expect them to play like their backs are against the wall,” Jayhawks coach Steve Wolvin said. “They are going to pull out all the stops.” This isn’t the first time the teams have met in 2015. In the season opener, Vandercook took what was a 14-14 tie at halftime, and turned it into a 27-14 victory, thanks in large part to a number of defensive stops deep in its own territory in the…

Making his mark

Photo by Matthew Mitchell, MSU Athletic Communications Willis already a major contributor with Michigan State football team   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   When he first got to Michigan State as a freshman safety, the goal was to maybe see the field on special teams.   If that wasn’t in the cards his first year, Khari Willis was ready to be redshirted and absorb as much as he could with the Spartans’ football team.   A few months removed from that initial objective, Willis stood in the end zone at Michigan Stadium, the screaming silence of more than 100,000 fans surrounding him in utter disbelief.   And beneath him lay Jalen Watts-Jackson.   “And all I could say was ‘you just won us the game,’” Willis recalled.   From the practice fields of Lumen Christi, the main star at Withington Stadium, to front and center in one of the most memorable Michigan State-Michigan games ever.   It’s been a wild ride for Willis the past 12 months or so, but as the former Titans standout put it, “it’s been a dream come true.”   “When the season started, I expected to come in here and be redshirted or see…

Mural Project Funding Complete with Weatherwax Grant

The Weatherwax Foundation recently donated the final $50,000 piece of a $394,000 puzzle to break ground on the CP Federal City Square in downtown Jackson. After CP Federal Credit Union officials announced a $100,000 contribution toward the construction of the Glidden Parker mural project - and penned a naming rights agreement with the City of Jackson - Weatherwax Foundation officials donated $50,000 to raise the necessary funds needed for the climate-controlled gallery site in Horace Blackman Park. “The Weatherwax Foundation appreciates efforts to develop and improve Jackson’s downtown,” said Maria Dotterweich, executive director of the foundation. “We hope the preservation and highlighting of this unique mural and the improved park amenities will encourage residents and visitors to meet.” CP Federal City Square will serve as a focal point of a current downtown placemaking effort in Jackson’s newly completed urban core park. The design of the structure will not only protect and preserve the 9 foot by 28 foot mural designed by famed artist Glidden Parker, but will include an art exhibit viewing area as well. “The Weatherwax Foundation is a great supporter of the arts in our community,” said Janet Meyer, chairperson of the Jackson Public Arts Commission. “Their contribution…
