Chamber Honors Award Recipients

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce presented their annual awards at the 107th Annual Meeting tonight at Jackson College Potter Center.  Winner of the Albert Earle Ambassador of the Year is Jenifer Robinson, Flagstar Bank.  The Ambassador of the Year is chosen by secret vote of the Ambassador membership.  The Brick Award for substantial facade and/or facilities upgrades was presented to Pleasant Lake Pub and owners Rick and Terri Zdanowitz.  The Brick Award for new construction presented to Mike Archer and Paul Anast with Mortgage 1/Midstate Title.  The new "Reach HIRE" award was presented to Industrial Steel Treating and Doug Scott and Jordan Levy.  The Athena Award, sponsored by Lloyd Ganton Retirement Centers was presented to Janice Fairly.  The final award of the evening, the Small Business Person of the Year was presented to Garry Applegate of Applegate Heating & Air Conditioning. Garry Applegate and Janice Fairly will be among the guests on the 15th Anniversary episode of The Bart Hawley Show on Friday, January 29.

Be a part of the magic as film makers of all ages share their story, artistry and imagination. So what exactly is Cabin Fever Film Fest? It is our annual event and opportunity for talented local filmmakers and aspiring young artists to share their story and creativity. Come enjoy unique independent short films from Michigan and beyond! Genres span from comedy, suspense, drama and science fiction. As with any art form, these films will inspire you and perhaps even cause you to see things from a different perspective. Above all they will entertain! These films are not rated and recommended for individuals 13 years and older. Your movie going experience is complete with popcorn, refreshments, beer and wine. Adrien Sharp’s JTV Chili Recipe

Adrien Sharp’s JTV Chili Recipe 2016 Serves: 20   Ingredients 2 (29 ounce) cans tomato sauce 2 (28 ounce) cans peeled and diced tomatoes 2 cups diced onion 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 2 pounds spicy sausage 3 pounds lean ground turkey 1 (32 ounce) bottle hickory smoke barbeque sauce 1/2 cup spicy chili powder 4 (15.25 ounce) cans kidney beans, undrained 2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped   Directions In a large pot or over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, tomatoes, onion and Italian seasoning. In the same skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until brown. Drain and stir into the pot. In the same skillet over medium heat, cook the turkey until brown. Drain and stir into the pot. Stir the barbeque sauce and chili powder into the pot; taste and adjust seasonings. Stir in the kidney beans and chocolate and simmer until flavors are well blended. Serve.

Defensive effort has given way to lengthy win streak for Columbia Central girls hoops   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Brooklyn – After a 1-2 start to the season, there was reason for concern.   This was supposed to be a strong year, and even though the roster contained just eight names, this was supposed to be a winning team.   And then, something happened.   Or, something clicked.   However you want to describe it, the results since for the Columbia Central girls basketball team speak for themselves.   Three games in, a 1-2 record.   Since then, well, 7-0.   “A lot of little different things happened. It’s not like one thing that we did or didn’t do,” coach David McDevitt said. “I mean, we had five girls return, but three new girls who were young and new to the team. City Ramps Up Water Quality Testing in Wake of Flint Crisis

In the wake of the lead water crisis in Flint, Jackson officials are ramping up their efforts to improve water testing in the city - going above and beyond federal water testing guidelines. While the Environmental Protection Agency requires Jackson to test homes within the city every three years for lead in the water supply, officials said they will begin to test lead levels annually while doubling the EPA-required number of homes tested. The state Department of Environmental Quality will perform its usual lead and copper tests in 30 locations within the city, while Jackson officials employ an independent firm to test an additional 30 locations. “The water crisis in Flint has raised concerns elsewhere, including in Jackson, and those concerns have not fallen on deaf ears,” said Will Forgrave, public information officer for the city of Jackson. “The city has sampled drinking water for lead and copper since 1992 - the year the federal Safe Drinking Water Act went into effect - and has never exceeded the EPA action level. “Still, we aren’t going to cut any corners when it comes to safe drinking water in Jackson,” he added.
