Albion baseball/softball clinic for kids was a hit

While respecting the differences between baseball and softball, Albion College's varsity ball and bat teams partnered to host 85 kids as part of the ongoing award-winning free sports clinics hosted by Albion's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on Feb. 13. Michael Fischbach, the baseball team's All-America center fielder, feels it's a moment to be a kid again himself. "I think the SAAC clinic is a fun time to connect with the kids in the community and take a break from the stresses that come with preparing for the season. It's nice to give back and hopefully give a kid a lasting memory or influence them in a positive way even if it is for just one day."   Please see the Albion Athletics website for the review of the event   Please see the Albion SAAC Facebook photo gallery

A total-team win

Depth of Jackson bench flexes muscle as Vikings run and gun past Holt (File Photo Jaylen Johnson)   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – Playing like this as March approaches is a goal for any team.   But playing like this, with this speed, defensive pressure and overall depth, well, it’s a reality the Jackson boys basketball team put on full display again.   The Vikings picked up their third-consecutive victory and bumped their record back to the .500 mark Tuesday, getting scoring contributions from nine different players in a 67-56 defeat of Holt.   “Balanced scoring, balanced defense, the rebounds were balanced,” coach Dan Crowley said afterwards. “We got a lot of play from the bench. We got a lot of energy. When guys realize that’s what we can do, when they have that big energy, we’re tough to play against.”   Holt did hold the lead at one point, just seconds in, to be exact, and it was a 2-0 advantage.   From that point on, Jackson took over.   The team’s leading scorer, Shonte Suddeth, was relegated to the bench due to early foul trouble, but the Vikings didn’t skip a beat.   Jackson led…

State Police: Prepare for Winter Storm

The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) encourages residents and visitors to prepare for a winter storm expected to affect parts of the Lower Peninsula from Wednesday morning and into Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of the JTV coverage area and is forecasting the possibility of 6 to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow.  The impacted area of the state spans from Southwest Michigan to the Thumb. Northeastern winds of up to 35 mph may lead to extensive blowing and drifting snow Wednesday and Thursday. Near white-out conditions are also possible. “Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm,” said Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. “Consider altering travel plans if possible, and if you must drive during the storm, please allow extra time to get to your destination so you can take it slow on ice and snow.” Anyone in the path of this weather system is strongly encouraged to make alternative plans in case weather conditions disrupt daily routines. Preparations include charging cell phones and other devices in case power is interrupted, evaluating…

SAU Baseball Preview: Head coach Sam Riggleman enters final season of HOF career

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The 2016 season will mark the end of an era for Spring Arbor University baseball as head coach Sam Riggleman enters the final year of his Hall of Fame coaching career.   Even though he is retiring at the season’s end, Riggleman, and his squad, will not lose sight of their goal – defending their Crossroads League championship and returning to the NAIA World Series for the first time since 2008.   “As I go into the final days of the preseason preparation, I am well aware that this is my final year as a head college coach,” said Riggleman. “Although that is a reality, I have been careful to not allow it to enter into the coaching and leading of this team. Just like our current players, I, too, want this to be a special year for this team. As has been the case for the past 39 years, I want the players to remain the focus of attention. Their ongoing development is my priority.”   As always, the key to a successful season will be strong pitching and solid defense. The Spring Arbor pitching staff boasted an impressive 3.38 earned run average a season ago, a mark that…

SAU Softball opens season Friday at Oakland City

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team is expected to get its 2016 season underway this weekend when it visits Oakland City University on Friday and Saturday. With a good mix of experienced upperclassmen and newcomer skill, the Cougars look to build on last year’s campaign. In order to be successful and climb the Crossroads League standings, unity and playing strong as one will be the key for this year’s squad.   “The key for this year’s team will be working together as a unit,” said head coach Deb Thompson. “Everyone doing their part together, and raising the level of play every time we compete.”   The Cougars are loaded with experience returning 13 players from a season ago, including 12 upperclassmen. Coach Thompson brings back two of her top three hitters in Savannah Weaver and Kaitlyn Sinclair, as well as her leading run producer in Beka Bentz.
